That's what I was thinking if I end up abandoning them in favor of soap/cream. That or make them part of my quarterly care packages to my sailors.
I am cheapskate so don't listen to me, I have one brush (Omega 49) and a Palmolive soap stick and I find it is fine if I have time. Usually I don't have much time as I am farmer so most of the time I use a can of Noxzema which can last me almost a year. As I use the same safety razor and blades for years now (Tech + Derby blades) with both stick and can I really can't say that I my skin feel any different after the shave. What does it for me and my skin was always a splash of Aqua velva or Afta which is always available in our General store.
I find that face lathering a cream or soap with a brush adds a dimension of exfoliation which provides better skin care. Although I still use canned cream on occasion and get good shaves, the brush combined with the more eclectic ingredients of artisan soaps and creams is a notch or two up.
I facelather the Barbasol with my brush. I warm the can in hot water so the lathers warm. Barbasols great stuff and it's what I started with over 30 years ago. Arctic Chill/Yellow can are my 2 favorites. Clayton
That's one reason I'd love to see a return of the Rise creams. I use a foam now(Rise), which I do like, but I want the original set to choose from.
I use both aerosol and shaving soap in addition to the occasional use of gel and creams in addition to some great bath soaps that work extremely well for shaving such as, Ivory, Cashmere Bouquet and several others. I thoroughly using all of them, and personally find that it's difficult to beat Barbasol. I have some expensive soaps that do have great fragrances although temporary, but doubt that I have anything that is better than some of the top aerosols like Barbasol, Brute and similar top brands. There is a reason that Barbasol is the number one shaving foam in the world. One of the fun aspects of this hobby is the plethora of shaving products to experience.
I beg to differ, but I use natural lemon extracts to remove grease stains. My wife on the other hand uses it for her skin cleansing. The other day, I used old spice shaving cream and was left with tomato red face. Such problem never happened when using canned foam or gel. I believe it is all about YMMV.
OK, point taken. But as you say, YMMV, so I will pass on the canned shave foam. But if it works for you, it doesn't matter who else likes it or doesn't.
I'm someone who likes using old-school canned foams&creams. Might that make me a "paradox shaver"? (Note-I never used a brush before).
Of course it is all YMMV . My intention was not to disagree with you but to inform you that you can consider this option as safe and use it when your first preference is not available.
If you like cans, you like them. However, if you've not tried a brush, you can't really say you prefer cans to brushes and creams/soaps. I don't know if that makes you a paradox shaver, so much as one who has yet to explore all his options.
Oh and I forgot to mention that I love Gillette foamy barbershop classic clean can. I like foams more than gel because you can always apply foam using a brush. . However, I do see a lot of men using foam, the following way Roger moore 007 shaving scene
I've seen comments that there's no need for an aftershave when you shave with the Gillette Foamy Barbershop-as the scent of the foam itself suffices. Might experiment with that sometime, as I do like the Gillette Barbershop can.
Me I find that the brush method does a much better job of softening the whiskers cleaning the pores and exfoliating. I don't spend a ton of time on it maybe 1-2 minutes working it in with the brush. My face feels much better and probably looks better. (depends on who you ask) As far as making lather I can get that done in about 1-2 minutes. I have my method / routine down, and it just works.
