24 days to go...and it has already received over $265,000 in backing.

    The Skarp Razor on Kickstarter

Putting aside initial, gutfeel reaction to dismiss it as stupid - I do think that this could actually have true value for people that struggle with traditional shaving.

I'll be honest and say that the technique intrigues me a lot. This is what I thought the future would be like when I was growing up: shaving with a laser! I rather like it! :D

I do wish that they had showed a real, working prototype though. Had I seen that I would be a backer.

    From the kickstarter page:

The Skarp razor is powered by a small laser which cuts through hair for an incredibly close shave. There are many benefits to using the Skarp Razor including:

    • No scratches
    • No razor burn
    • No infection
    • No itch
    • No accidental cutting
    • No irritation
    • Effortless smooth stroke
    • No painful waxing or messy depilatory creams
    • Incredibly close & smooth shave
    • No expensive cartridges replacements
    • Little to no water usage
    • Environmentally friendly
The last two are very important to us. 2 Billion razors or razor heads are thrown away each year in the US alone! Due to the hazardous nature of the blades, they can't be sorted & no individual municipality or district produces enough to make specialized collection cost effective. So they end up in land fills & garbage dumps.

Interesting. My guess is from the demo, it'll take far more than the one pass they are depicting. Something to follow. Thanks for sharing this.

This looks very cool and interesting, but I am with @Darkbulb in that I would have to see a working prototype before I would back it.
Shaving with a tiny lightsaber would bet pretty awesome, though.

How would something that basically burns hair off not cause some form of irritation?

My biggest concern would be what it does to the skin. You can not avoid having the laser shining right on your skin accidentally, for example while shaving under the jaw. If the laser is strong enough to cut hair, can it cause mutation in cells?

That's just a huge cop out, anyway. The only true recycling that actually helps the environment is aluminum recycling. The rest uses more resources to recycle than just making new products.

Taking this in production in March 2016 ... are we sure they don't mean April 1, 2016? ;)

If I read this correctly, it means "no lather needed". On that basis, I am going to veto this laser device! :D

That will get you closer than a 4 iron.
Makes one wonder how much "force" needs to be used.

I think they are shooting for the moon.
    (H) air conditioning and an exhaust fan?
    That's jaw dropping.

Makes one wonder if they took all these valid objection into consideration. Leave it to @Darkbulb to find something like this. Great posts everyone.

Just the other day I was showing a new razor acquisition to my 14 year old son who was less than impressed. I told him that someday all these razors would be his and after asking how much they were worth he said by the time I'm having to shave everyday we'll be shaving with lasers. I laughed and said yeah right. Who knew?

Tuned laser and resonant frequency differences between hard keratin in hair and collagen/water in skin.

Resonant frequency is why you can put a rock in a microwave, and if it's dry, it won't heat up.
