That's why, try some Proraso or Arko. Or our very own TSD Shop soaps. It'll get better! But more product (soap)
I have some Stirling soap I received and most of the time get a great lather but I try to use it on the weekends (only have a little bit of it) and then the oagllala through the week for work shaves.and yes soap is cheap but shipping is not.I don't have any shave shops near me.
Thank you all for the well wishes on my 1 year on TSD. I look forward to many more years participating here with you guys.
I'm going to dig out my Old Type head, and my Gillette New SC sometime soon and give them a spin. You guys are truly inspiring me to get onboard with an Open Comb.
Ok, SOTD Razor- Parker 71R Soap- Classic brand Sandalwood Blade- Astra superior platinum Brush- Classic Brand super badger Struggled to get a lather going for several minutes and finally built a substantial enough lather that would hold for the shave. Far from BBS, but not too bad for a first go around, only 2 nicks. Mild irritation, learned a lot this morning.
Clint, congratulations on your first TSD anniversary, and here's to many more days of enjoyable shaves and time here on TSD! You certainly celebrated it with a great set up this morning. I noticed that you selected a Feather blade for the special occasion: Feather = BBS shave I have learned much from you, and I've enjoyed getting to know you. This place wouldn't be the same without you. I can say without a doubt that you're my "go to" person when it comes to using the Mongoose. Enjoy your day!
So, here's your proper introduction to the OCtober focus thread. Think before you reply. This is how Custom Titles (CT's) are earned.
Thanks Charlie. No special occasion for the Feather Blades. I just followed you and decided to use them as my primary blades.
I can't remember how much Soap Commander charges for shipping (I do know it's free for $50 or more in the U.S.) but they do offer a 10% discount for active and retired military. Check out the website here: http://soapcommander.com/ they have great stuff. Super performance, easy to lather.
I'm not familiar with the soap you're using, but I agree with Kerry's advice about using more product in general. I've watched a lot of YouTube video tutorials, and I probably use twice the product that these guys use. I also found face lathering to be more effective for me than bowl lathering. It's also quicker and helps prepare your face better for the shave, IMO. It's easy to try. @CyanideMetal will tell you to "rub the puck on your face" to get some soap on your face, and that's exactly how to get started. You can always pick up a couple of shave sticks, which are designed for face lathering, if it works for you. Shave sticks are also easy to drop into your travel kit when a shaving bowl may not be as practical. Maybe worth a try? I also use vigorous circular brush strokes to get started. I finish with back and forth strokes, and that seems to pump up the volume of lather. I even add a few drops of glycerin to the brush tips and work it in. Glycerin likes water, and it will actually dry out your lather unless you add more water. But when you do add water (talking about drops, not a lot), it will pump up your lather even more. (You don't need to use glycerin at all. This is just something I do because it is cheap, and it works for me.) I hope this helps. Keep us posted on your progress.
I'll be away on my trip for the entire month so I'll be using my travel items. Merkur 4pc safety razor with some Feather blades Parker travel brush Arko shave stick Proraso Blue aftershave....gonna find a smaller bottle and put some of it into it. I can't post a pic of it unfortunately. Imageshack has been down for days, still is.
Thanks and I will try different water amounts tonight.and as for nick shaves.I think I have watched all of his vids.I will definitely keep everyone updated on the progress.
Here are a couple of options to consider, then. You can pick up C.O. Bigelow cream (rebranded Proraso) at Bath and Body Works. It often goes on sale. You can also find Kiss My Face cream in a pump container at some drugstores and super markets. It's inexpensive, and it works great for me also. My Bride likes it too.
Good Morning gents! I see we are off to the races, great enthusiastic start to October. Very exciting to see the new faces for the first time! Two things I am going to focusing on this month... 1) Making a consistent lather each day from a shave stick. 2) Discerning differences between blade types in a Gillette 195 My plan for the month is to shave with an OC today as a nod to the guys doing OCtober, but will then spend 30 Days on the FB, since I missed out on August. My plan: 30 Days of Gillette FB Gillette FatBoy Adjustable Various blades L'Occitane Plisson Synthetic La Toja Shave Stick Thanks to everyone for participating in our little 30 Day thread! Techniques trump tools. Let's spend another month proving that theory every day. We have some new faces, welcome! If you are new, please feel free to tag me or PM with anything you need help with. Helping you get the most from your tools is what we are all about, don't let all the shenanigans fool you! The guys who've been with us for a while know what they're doing, and they will drop all the shenanigans and help you if you just ask! So...good luck guys! I know it's gonna be a great month!
