Had my first pipe in quite a while this afternoon. I've had an allergy problem of some kind. There is a lot of golden rod around close to my house this year, and I suspect that's the culprit. I had a physical a couple of weeks ago, and my GP said the pollen count in our area was the highest in several years. So while working around the garage this afternoon I had some Peterson University Flake in my Peterson Christmas pipe. Although the flakes were fairly moist, it burned very well. I'll have to say I wasn't very impressed with the University Flake. Perhaps after some proper drying, and taking my time with a bowl, it will suit me better. We will see.
Let me know how it is when dried. I've been eyeing some Peterson tobaccos and that's one of them. May be a while though. I just ordered 10 ounces of Comoys Cask #1, 12 pouches of John Bull (18 ounces), 2 tins of Gatsby Luxury Flake, 3 3.5 ounce tins of Mac Baren Vanilla Creme and a tin of Balkan Sasieni. As well as 120 filters and a pipe care kit. Now I'm just eyeing ebay for some more good Grabow deals. I'm watching a vintage Starfire with the adjustomatic system I think it's called. Anyone have any input on the Gatsby or on the Adjustomatic systems?
The day before I was in an antique store in Bryan, TX. They had a bad selection of about 6 pipes, one was a Savinelli but had a cracked bowl. They were on a three-tier pipe stand. The stand held about 14 pipes on each tier, so it would hold 42 pipes total. I asked what he wanted for it but he said it wasn't for sale - he wouldn't have any way to display his pipes if he sold it. It's just as well, I'd have to find space to put it, then I'd feel compelled to get enough pipes to fill it.
I had a bowl of 1888 Early Day while walking my dog at halftime. It's curious how things change. I like this one a bit less when I try to snork- I'm still learning, so surely my technique needs to improve. I like Captain Black a bit more lately, maybe just a newbie drawn to sweetness.
Opened a tin of Drew Estates Heirloom Cherry this afternoon. I've generally avoided aromatics, but this was pretty good, just a hint of cherry in the smoke. It burned well, cool with just a couple of relights near the end.
Can't sleep, so having a cup of hot pumpkin spice cider and a bowl of Sutliff Private Stock: Old San Fransisco in my Dr. Graybow Grand Duke.
Just ordered some nat sherman 509 that i liked alot when i tried it and based on this thread ordered orlik golden sliced.....how long does pipes and cigars generally take?
I think it depends on where you are. It seems to take a little over a week to get from Bethlehem, PA to the Houston, TX area.
Thats what i figured....im in Ca, so sadly ill be waiting...i like online prices but hate the waiting game....that orlic golden sliced was 25$ in a local shop
Wow, that is really out of line. I like supporting local stores, and don't mind paying a little premium to have a place I can walk in and discuss all things pipes and everything else. But that is really high. Are they overpriced on everything to that extent?
Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky in my Lorenzo on a beautiful evening. About an hour and a half to finish two flakes. TobaccoReviews indicates a licorice flavor for this tobacco, but I don't taste any licorice at all. http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/827/orlik-tobacco-company-a-s-dark-strong-kentucky I only have a couple of flakes left in the tin. I need to get some more of this along with the Golden Slice. The next few days have rain in the forecast, so I may have to forgo my evening pipe since I smoke outside on an uncovered patio.
$25 is insane for Orlik. I would just assume that shop doesn't need support at 300% markup over Internet retail. I need to order some Orlik Dark soon, I've been meaning to. Weather is changing here too, but it was great fun talking pipes all summer!
$25 for a tin of Orlik is ridiculous! Even for a 3.5oz tin. Seems you're in the same boat as I am with local shops. Sadly, I am becoming more and more disenchanted with P&C lately. I placed an order a week ago, and they only shipped it today. AND they charged me shipping when my order was over $100 and thus should have been free. And those are just a few of the problems I've had. I may need to call and talk to Scotty, because P&C seems to be going downhill service wise. There selection and prices pertainig to tobacco are fantastic! But it's all for not if the ervice is lacking. Also, check of WVsmokeshop.com. They have a lesser selection, but great prices and far better ability to choose pipes. P&C for instance will not let you choose shapes and such when you order pipes like Dr. Grabow, Medico, Kaywoodie, Yello-Bole, etc. WVsmokeshop however does, and their prices for most pipes are actually lower than P&C. Definitely worth a look.
I think just that outrages on tobacco because they dont have much....i bought a lighter and some stuff that was reasonable and they have a ton of cigars so i think those are reasonable, but just one tiny shelf of pipe tobacco
I must quit smoking, have several pipes and different tobacco, would like to give away to first responder! Pipes are mostly made by Boswell.
