Hey guys. First off, finished set for my girlfriend, with Dr jons aphrodite cream and that beautiful switchback 400 and merkur 23c sitting on yet another beautiful piece of art made my the talented @Jayaruh *crowd cheering* OK OK settle down guys I still haven't asked my question. So she absolutely LOVES this cream but I simply hate it in comparison to a soap like razorock because her soap leaves no sickness behind and makes for a bad shave for me, but the thing is, with that razor a lot of my hard soaps seem to clog up in between the blade very quickly and slow the shave if not preventing it completely. So my question is what are some soaps that are very good about not having this issue? I am open to creams but not anything that will not last at least 2 months of daily shaving (she shaves her legs and armpits everyday so she uses a decent amount of lather) Thanks guys!
so are you having issues with the soap or is she (or both)? are you looking for a soap for you (or both)?
For her. I do not have an issue with my razor but she has a problem with the soaps with her merkur 23c
Neither I nor SWMBO have had issue with soaps clogging our razors, but then again neither uses a Merkur so IDK. Seems like soap, being water soluble, wouldn't do that. I do know that many people don't rinse their razor during use, maybe that's the problem. Even though a DE shouldn't get clogged easily, I have always had the habit of doing a swipe with each side then swishing it around in the sink to clear any soap and stubble out before another two swipes. Maybe her best bets is one of the soft soaps like proraso, Figaro etc.
Hmm I guess some might, but I've read many where they specifically refer to rinsing the razor only after each pass. Seemed strange to me, but ymmv.
If you haven't already tried it, pick up some of PAA ( pheonix artisan accoutrements )shave soap. The prices are compairable, accually slightly less per oz. Dr. Jon's and will certainly last 2 + months. There is bound to be a scent that she likes and the quality is amazing. It won't clog at all and the sickness is great. Another great company that come to think of it has and entire inventory geared towards the ladies is Maggard Razors. The prices and quality rank right along side the above mentioned two companies. Regarding rinsing the razor. You definitely want to do as often as needed to keep it clean . There is no set number of strokes or passes. Some prefer under forceful running water from the tap in the sink. You can also pick up samples for a buck or two and try out a few and see which ones work the best for you. Then invest in a full size. By chance is a pre shave oil, bar or cream used ? That may be a factor as well. Hope this helps even a little.
She doesn't use any type of preshave oil. So that isn't what clogs it up. I believe it is just how to razor is and how it reacts to a very thick lather. I will be sure to check out some of their soaps! I appreciate your advice.
I think you may be on to something. When you said thick lather. When I face lather it's always thicker than when when I bowl lather. I start dry and add water as needed, but the first layer is always so thick I usually wind up whipping the rest up in my bowl for the remaining passes. For me it's easier to get a perfect lather in my bowl than on my face. Then you throw a soap stick into the picture and it could be a whole new set of rules. I don't know I have never used one, yet. But I will, soon.....very soon.
