Each time I shave, I have to choose: (1) Do I go ATG on my last pass, get a fairly close shave (but nowhere near BBS), but put up with 1-2 dozen nicks and weepers and angry red irritation; or, (2) do I do a second XTG pass for my third pass, end up with a little more stubble, but zero nicks or weepers, and very little irritation? After two years of trying every combination of razor, blade, soap, preshave, balm, chants, and incantations I could afford, I have finally decided to go with option #2. I can feel the difference in the stubble, but my wife can't. No one can see the difference, except to notice my neck isn't Santa Claus-red. I can now use alcohol based aftershaves. (Hello, Clubman! Sorry honey.) And I can now use almost every razor in my arsenal and achieve similar results day after day. I call this shave GES - Good Enough Shave. GES is not complaining, or whining. It's simply admitting that, due to genetic variables beyond my control, I can only go so far. And I'm quite happy with that. I therefore move that we add "GES" to our official wet-shaving vocabulary. Join me, my sensitive-skinned, sparsely-bearded/leg-haired brothers and sisters!
I hear ya! But isn't that what DFS is for? At least that's what I use it for - those shaves with no ATG that looks darn fine but is not BBS. That's good enough for me
By my standards, the best shave I can get does not quite measure up to DFS. It's a matter only of a fraction of a millimeter of stubble, and persistent redness on my jawline I get if I even think about shaving. But, for me, it's enough of a difference. I'm just joking, though, about changing our vocabulary. (Unless the popular support forces me to become a hero....) I will probably use DFS- (minus) as a descriptor. People will understand that.
I've always used CCS (close comfortable shave) as one step down from DFS, which is of course a step down from BBS.
I just go for a comfortable shave and make sure I don't leave unsightly patches of stubble behind. I haven't chased the 'baby' in years. I'm also a strictly WTG shaver, so that might have something to do with it. If I want a really close, sometimes comfortable shave, I can always pull out one of my Shake Sharp's or the PAA double open comb. Either is aggressive enough to get the job done, yet mild enough to allow for daily use.
I wouldn't withdraw it on that basis, since "good enough" suggests a downward departure from "close, comfortable." That said, "SAS" (socially acceptable shave), which is already in the lexicon, might be the equivalent of GES. Here's the hierarchy, as I understand it: BBS DFS CCS SAS/GES SPS (sandpaper shave) DIESS (did I even shave? shave)
Quite common. Hurry, single pass, shave again in evening if needed. Advantage, apart from time? You get to lather up twice in a day
@rmcintyre84 i like GES, I'm going to start using it. It actually makes total sense, if it's a Good Enough Shave for me, it's all good.
I'm with you. As of now I the best I can do is DFS/CCS. Most the of the time somewhere between the two. The one time I decided to go ATG for BBS, my wife invented a new shaving acronym: SWADCS, Shave With a Dull ChainSaw
I just shave a 3/4pass shave most of the time then let it grow for another 3 days or so my face is smooth but not my neck...just saying
I don't like DFS because of the D, so it is CCS for me. However, I would also like PGS, Pretty Good Shave.
I'm mostly XTG/ATG and the baby comes to me. I also haven't gone through puberty yet, maybe that's a factor.
