First of all, welcome to SOTD! No cringe, no stress on TSD. We are thrilled you couldn't wait for traditional soap! Congrats on successfully making the switch to a DE razor!

I would suggest a boar or synthetic brush and either TSD, Proraso, Arko or LaToja. I feel like those four soaps are good values, are the easiest to get started with, are tolerant of water ratio and hardness, and all 4 easily produce good lather.

Technique is paramount in any type of shaving, if you master that Gillette...like shave in the dark master it...you will be a very happy guy. It's a classic razor! Don't overthink it, you're doing great! Shave well, have fun! :happy088:

    Good morning everyone.

    My friday shave:

    - Mr Taylors Shaving Cream
    - Vie-Long Horsehair brush
    - Phoenix DOC
    - Feather blade
    - Tüff sensitiv Rasierwasser

    P1040394 Kopie.jpg

Great shave - the Phoenix and the Feather blade apparently match really well. Almost BBS with two passes, just one tiny nick on the neck. Still not sure about the brush though ... definitely not a candidate for the No Variation November ...

Today is going to be a tough one. A teacher at my school has lost her battle with cancer, and we are helping our students remember her life and grieve.
I chose to shave with things that remind me of my Dad. He was an Aqua Velva man, and Maggard's London Barbershop reminds me of that scent. This is also how the barbershop he always took me to smelled.

Hug your loved ones a little tighter today.

Another first for me - the Matas soap from Denmark is fantastic. It has a very nice, mild and soapy scent. Its lather is so easy to get going and it left my skin feeling so smooth and comfortable. My Bay Rum aftershave from Mr Brian Krampert was a most enjoyable finish to such a great shave! :happy088:

Prep: Rusty Blade blend pre-shave oil
Razor/Blade: Bluebeards Revenge Shavette / Derby and Gillette Canadian Heavy Tech / Gillette 7 o'clock
Brush/Soap: Simpsons Special / Proraso White
Aftershave: Stiptic pencil, Witch Hazel/ Eucerin Cream

Tried the shavette again this morning. Only did my cheeks and then switched to my Tech to finish up. I am getting better with a lighter touch and a better angle, but still ended up with several weepers. :angry032:. Not sure I will ever get the hang of it. My skin can't seem to tolerate the shavette. Pity...I really would like to use a SR.

I was looking at this thread yesterday, where distilled water was being discussed. I decided to use distilled water this morning and it definitely makes for a more frothy lather than when I use tap water.

Before I started this 30 day focus I measured out 20 grams (1/10th of a jar) of MDC. After using MDC daily for 30 days, I used a grand total of 9.01 grams. That is just a little over 0.3 grams / shave. Therefore, a jar of MDC should last me about 660 days for an average cost of about 12 cents / day. My conclusion is that MDC is very inexpensive.

After 30 days of practice I am getting great shaves from the Fat Boy. I am not sure I like it better than my Slim Adjustable, but it definitely can give me as good of a shave.

    30 day focus - Day 30
    Fat Boy set to 9
    Dorco 301 Blade
    MDC Face Lathered
    3 passes

This knot isn't set quite right so a tweak will be in it's future. Superb shave today. I really like the new Cade soap especially with a touch of L'Occitane Vetyver. Have a good one.

Welcome to TSD! No need to cringe. We all start somewhere, and some of us keep a can of cream around for emergencies. You're correct about the adjustable. Lower numbers are less aggressive. If you live near a Bath and Body Works, they carry C.O. Bigelow, which is a wonderful cream. Wal-Mart's usually have Van Der Hagen soap, which many of us enjoy. L'oreal and Nivea post shave balms are readily available.

Again, welcome to a great community. I'm sure others will add their much more knowledgeable advice to mine.

    today's shave
hot water wash with nuetrogena men's invigorating face wash and a washcloth
    Parker pure badger
    soap commander love
    Berkeley Custom Shaver(3.5)
    persona lab(1)
    soap commander love balm
today's shave was nice. I opted for love on this nice Friday. my one hand felt stiff and sore, so I decided to use my Berkeley. three passes left me smooth as glass. comfy but for a moment's lapse of concentration(nicked the end of my chin). finished with a spray of witch hazel and a rub down of the love balm.
hope y'all did as well, or better.
