I've had a busy weekend and didn't get a chance to post yesterday. I did shave both days with my Feather AC. Yesterday was day seven on a Professional blade and I still got a nice DFS two pass shave with it. Today I had an early morning appointment and had to shave in a hurry. I was a little nervous about using this razor in a rush. I loaded a fresh blade in it and decided to do one thorough pass instead of two rushed passes. I got a surprisingly good single pass shave with no irritation or blood. I wouldn't quite call it DFS but it was a more than acceptable shave that still looks pretty good 13 hours later. I'm starting to like this razor and have actually started to look at traditional straights. Yes, I'm toying with the dark side. SOTD TOBS Grapefruit Rubberset 400 Feather AC SS Feather Professional (1) Old Spice AS
Earlier this year, I got 12 comfy dfs in a row from a single Derby. All posted to this group. As your skills progress, blades will matter more AND less, yes I wrote that right, than they do now. Techniques Trump tools.
Cold water shaving isn't for me. It ended up being a DFS- because of a little roughness below the jaw. I whipped up the Proraso White with the WD synthetic and set blade to face with the Y2 Super Speed and GSB(day 5). I didn't like the feel of the cold water shave. I felt like the soap didn't lather as well. I ended up completing a 2 pass XTG, ATG with additional G-slide on the neck and mild buffing around the mouth. I finished up with some gillette fusion intense cooling lotion I had from a giftset 6 or 7 Christmases ago. I didnt use it because I didn't like the burn of the alcohol. Today it was quiet other then a wind dried crack at the corner of my mouth and a nick I hadnt noticed that started bleeding as soon as the lotion touched it. a cold washcloth stopped the bleeding within seconds. I think day 5 was too much for the GSB on my face. It tugged more then I felt it should and it took an extra pass on my trouble spots to get a clean feel. I won't use one longer then 4 days after this. I will try a cold water shave on a different day with a newer blade but, based on today I prefer the warmth.
I imagine many of my troubles came from using a mild razor also. I just got a ton of tugging from the SS/Derby set up.
That doesn't surprise me at all. Make a note to try Derby in the Maggard OC head. It will perform better.
tomorrow it is. triangle guard hole ball end tech, derby blade and Williams with a Col Conk "pure" badger brush. I'll make sure the medkit is nearby and the witch hazel is ready next to the styptic.
Will definitely try it out. I tried using a feather in a Parker 71R and it seemed too agressive. But I haven't found a blade I like in the Parker so far.
You definitely practice what you preach on Pinaud! I like Clubman quite well and use the Pinaud Clubman hair tonic almost daily right now.
Ok guys, my shave went rather well. the AS was extremely quiet. I don't have any alum yet. Lol. No weepers or nicks, the swede blade seemed to slightly tug on ATG but with the slim on a more agressive setting I'm definitely having to pay more attention to angle. The GG Oakmoss tallow performed flawlessly. Easy lather, fantastic scent, great slickness all the way until I washing my face off. Easily made enough lather for the 4 passes. I almost declared the baby for the first time ever. But I can't just yet. One very tiny patch. DFS++. Extremely happy with the soap as well. I will post with two pictures as @JR Reyes asked.
That's an 89type head. Derby should be ok, GSB should shine. You must ride the cap with that razor for optimal results!
You can get Alum at a pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist for potassium alum deodorant. It's the same thing, comes in a block, stick, ball or rock. Avoid any product containing aluminum, it's not the same stuff as barber alum. Good looking lather today!
You can even check the exchange or commisary on base. Crystal brand I think it's called. Might even be in the deodorants section. Lather shot...
