Aftershave names that make no scents

i love to look at products and search the net for new places to buy from but one thing i just can't deal with is a supplier / manufacturer that does not explain the scent? why would you try to market a scent by saying things like "it's smells like a roller coaster on the 4th of july in the middle of the sahara desert near a music festival" what the heck does that mean? Don't get me wrong, i love some tongue in cheek but i really like facts too. I am not going to buy all 17 of your aftershaves to find the one that has some hints of sandalwood in it. "Starts out with clove and melts into orange with a musk hint"...... how hard is that?

I agree, well said. If I want interpetations of a scent I find them in the reviews and get several takes. For picking a scent I want the list that makes the scent as most of us actually have a clue of what we like so we can try a go to scent or try something different. Lack of that info strikes me as deceptive which makes me not want to contribute.

Good point xnykind. I find myself searching for answers on other sites after reading descriptions like what you posted.
I don't mind the creativity when describing a scent, but a formal description as well is also required.
I am not going to purchase if I have to guess what it smells like.

There is one company that is famous for doing this, and that is the reason I have not tried any of their A/S. The fantasy description is cool but it doesn't help someone to decide if the scent is for them or not. Just a simple list of scent notes can go a long way to help someone figure out roughly what a product smells like.

I always do a Google search that looks like this: (insert fragrance name here) Basenotes. The first result is almost always the notes and reviews page.

    Example: http://www.basenotes.net/ID26136914.html

    Edit:
Here's a review that honestly cracks me up. Skip to the bottom if you want to know the fragrance being reviewed...

"This beautiful and potent fragrance ramps up with a complex citrus base that starts with stronger notes of Citral and Citronellol but balances nicely with definite hints of the tart Limonene along with a wispy dry note of Geraniol.

The middle was pretty much strong notes of the increasingly ubiquitous Hydroxycitronellal that was tamed to some degree with notes of a more dominant semi-sweet Linalool but then is very interestingly roughed up again with the decidedly heady presence of Oak Moss Extract.

The dry-down was moderately spicy with powdery notes...almost like pine fir bathed in talc...through the Evernia Prunastri and an earthy but soft Treemoss Extract with subtle chappy hints of Evernia Furfuracea.

It's a perfectly acceptable and wearable "old school" type of scent that's ideal for running weekend errands, poring over subpoenaed tax records or wolfing down a casual mid-afternoon lunch with a current or former downtown lover.

It's been the same product for 100 years and is still a very recognizable after shave cologne to that of the original formulation.

    And I still LOVE IT."

    The fragrance? Pinaud Clubman. :)

That's a polite way of saying "Burning Man neo-hippie stink, with notes of patchouli, Red Bull, marijuana, bike chain grease, unwashed clothing, Prius exhaust and smug self-satisfaction."

    I try. :D

Basenotes is it's own rabbit warren. Tread carefully. You can get sucked in just as easily as here...and the hit to the bank account can be far more substantial.

Sounds like they managed to bottle the aroma of a few neighborhoods here in Seattle.;)

ha! no i wish it was the veg, I would have known what i was getting into at least. I bought 8 samples from a well known place and being samples i went with 6 products that the name and description had nothing to do with the scent. one out of the 6 is very nice and i would buy it but some of the others were just.....not for me.
