I worked on Hodge's razor over the weekend and today. I believe that grey stuff is lead solder to affix the spring. I have a bunch of pictures showing what I have done so far. The first thing I did was straighten put the comb. That was super easy on this model as it is supported on either end. I simply took a screwdriver and pushed it in until it was straight. The next thing I did was to cutout the spring blank. I used .020 brass shim stock. It is a bit thicker than the original as that is all I had it will do. I think it will be a stringer spring. So it should hold the blade nicely. Next I made a buck to form the spring shape. All of this is just my best guesstimate on dimensions. I added 10 degrees more to the spring angle as it will not form exactly to the shape. I then put the blank on the buck and clamped it in my vise. Making sure to have the entire top surface of the spring clamped as to not let if move out of shape.I took and bent the back small area first. Then flipped it over and bent the front spring. I had to use a drift pin and ball peen hammer and massage that into shape. I then sanded the face smooth to make it look nice again. I need to finish sanding tomorrow. I then will bond it back together. More updates tomorrow.
Yes I am pretty happy with the results so far. I might go and see if any jewelers around can give it a quick gold plate. Not sure if they do that. It is worth a try. It will finish that of nicely if I can get that done. Tom
Thanks. I get a real rush trying different things I have never attempted before. Some times it works other times it doesn't. I always learn something new from each attempt. Tom
Have the sheath....now I just need the razor...it seems it's taking a looong time to have it trekked down from Canada Thanks again @twhite for your generous gift - you have some mad leather-making skills, it looks great!
I am going to use JB weld. That should hold for a 30 years or so. I remade the spring today. I was not totally happy with the first one. I will post some pictures tonight. I plan on bonding it tomorrow. Tom
Any how as I was not totally pleased with the first spring. I remade it. I moved the clearance hole back 1/32" and changed the front radius on the spring so it sat flatter against the top of the head. It fits much better now. No oval on the spring and a nice tight fit. Here are some pictures from this afternoon. JB weld on head ready to receive the spring and it all clamped up for 24 hours to cure. I will take pictures tomorrow of the completed razor. Tom spring on left first try. not too good. Right hand one much better. Spring on left first one. too large of bend at top. spring on right smaller radius made a much better fit. that is just the angle I am holding it. the springs are the same thickness and overall size. JB Weld on head ready for spring. all clamped up 24 hour full cure time.
Billy I am quite pleased on how that tuned out. Now if somebody comes across one without the spring they can get a replacement. Tomorrow I will give it a final cleaning and see how it holds the blade in place. I used a bit thicker Brass shim stock I was hoping to get a higher seal on the blade. Tom
