NOVember - NO Variation November 23 Razor - Feather SS AC Pain Stick Blade - (4) Soap - Mitchell's Wool Fat Post - Cold Water, Alum, Nivea Monday Monday. Yep, it's that day. Still can't complain when it starts with BoSFat and the Feather SS is in a good mood. Did a two pass today without incident and decided to try a third. I haven't done much ATG with this razor so tried some on my face and neck. Worked better on my neck but I didn't leave any bloody mess anywhere. Did increase the irritation factor by several notches and the alum was happy to prove that for me. Nivea cooled it off and it was out the door to a great late fall day in the Lou. Lots of sun and about 60 degrees. Now, Monday's out of the way so let's move on!
11/23/15 Gillette Super Speed Y3 Vulfix Super Badger (660) WSO (Wet Shave Obsession) Signature Georgetown G12 Scuttle Pinaud Clubman Original Shaved this morning and haven't had a chance to post until now. I went with the WSO Signature and had shave #3 with the 5th Gillette Silver Blue in my Birth Quarter Super Speed. Tried to use less product today so I didn't spend as much time as the last few days in the tin. Used my scuttle to work up the lather until it seemed to be a good consistency and felt pretty slick. But when I put it on my face it went on much thinner than I expected. So I added water to the brush and whipped it up some more until the lather was thicker. 2 full passes: Pass 1 XTG. Good reduction. Pass 2: ATG. Afterwards, I did some touch up where I could easily feel stubble. This gave me a nice DFS. A cold water rinse followed by a moderate amount of touch up and I had the baby. The Pinaud Clubman was mild. A nice BBS from the Gillette Silver Blue in my Birth Quarter Super Speed with the WSO Signature. This soap gave good protection and lasted the entire shave, but there wasn't very much left afterwards. I'm still pretty new at lathering soaps. I'm sure over time I'll get more consistent. I suspect that my technique will improve faster if I pick a soap and stay with it. I'll do that soon.
@Bama Samurai im taking the Maggard for her maiden voyage tonight. I wanted to give the slim a break, and pick it back up tomorrow. I've been itching to try another OC. So here we go, Rapira in the heavy handled beast!
Which handle do you have on the maggard? I have been debating on getting either the 5 or the 8 to try a heavier handle. If it is one of those I would be interested in your thoughts.
Nov 24 Focus shave 24 I think I found the secret to lathering DR Harris, today I sued my Omega Pro. This brush shows no mercy to even the hardest of soaps. Lots of wet, creamy lather. I shaved last night so there is no way I can go for a BBS after just 14 hours. 3 passes with my Futur load with a new Gillette Super Thin. Alum test and on a faint tickle. Well guys... It's looking like I may be an open comb guy. I can't get a shave as comfortable with any safety bars. I just love the open comb feel. I guess my next move is to get a vintage open comb. The 8 handle was pretty nice. Added lots of great heavy weight to the shave. I may try that head on a different handle just to see how much of a difference handle weight has on a head!
Glad you got a good shave! I definitely enjoyed an open comb razor too. Given the weight of the 8 handle, did you find out difficult at all going against gravity? On the down strokes obviously the handle will easily do the work for you but were any upstrokes made more difficult? Thanks for any insight
There was a couple times when I thought to myself "man this sure is heavy". But it definitely made it feel like a tool instead of a toy!
My shave started out perfectly. The WD synthetic whipped up the Proraso White into the best lather I have ever seen grace my Old Spice mug. I bowl lathered today for giggles and because my lather yesterday was lacking. I picked up the shavette with a new blade in it and it felt bad from the start. I tiptoed thru my WTG pass and XTG on my cheeks then I gladly traded it for the Super Speed. The blade was on its last day must have been shave 5 with it because it wasn't even that comfortable. I stopped before I was satisfied with almost not even a CCS. I tried the Alum, Ouch. The fires of Hell could not have burned any hotter then my face. I uncapped my dwindling supply of Nivea Sensitive post shave balm and slathered it on. I could feel my skin drinking it in. The air is chilly and very dry here right now and I was out in it for awhile in the wind so between all the dry air and the Alum I needed the moisterizer in the balm. I rinse off the Alum after a few min. My lather was so amazing I left it and the brush uncleaned for the morning when I will try a one pass plus touchup to finish off my shave into something I'll enjoy. In a few years for my 30th Birthday I'm going to try growing a full beard like this except with an amazing handlebar stache to go with it: My fiance picked the picture when I told her I wanted to grow a massive full beard at least once in my life. I'm adding the handlebar for me. I kept my hair cut that way for awhile before I shaved it off a few months ago to get rid of green color so I could work somewhere that didn't allow for such things. I'll keep it trimmed up on the neck and high on the cheeks but its going to happen. then I'll shave it off in one wack with a straight and video it for you guys to watch. Fun right? I may do it earlier if I get a job that allows beards.
The most comfortable OC razor I know of is the Merkur 15C - not a vintage though, but I think it's an even smoother shaver than its CC brother, the 34C Next on my smoothness list is the Phoenix DOC. My Gillette New LC is a little harsher, but still a great razor. Old Type is a beast.
Yet again an example of YMMV. I thought the Old Type was tame mild and smooth with every blade I've put in it. I was scared of it at first because of its reputation but its one of my best shavers.
Good morning everyone Had a nice shower and afterwards just another fantastic shave with a slight software change today: - WSP Gaelic Tweed - Semogue 620 - Mühle R89 - Gillette Silver Blue (#3) - SebaMed ASB Not too many stubbles to work on, since yesterday's shave has been rather thorough. I wanted to shave anyways, just for pleasure, so I thought why not give it a shot with one of the new soap samples. And what a great soap that WSP is. Lathered easily, slick and creamy with very good cushioning. And I just love the scent - it reminds me of spring - fresh, grassy, with some citrus and earthy notes. Definitely one to put on the to-buy-list for next year. The shave itself: 2 passes with no touchups today, still BBS. I know my face and my razor pretty well now, so it's becoming more and more effortless to achieve a really nice shave. Finished with cold water rinse and some SebaMed balm, because it's unscented and I wanted to preserve the smell of the soap. A+ on both smothness and irritation today Have a great day
