    Good evening good people,

I recently discovered that castor oil is what we here in Denmark call "American oil". Ingest it and prepare to get your bowels cleaned. Used for constipation.

So, I was looking at the bottle of Castor oil I got for eg. pre-shave-oil, and it specifically says "not for internal use. External only". I got it on Amazon Marketplace from a well-respected dealer in the UK. Lots of the comment reviews includes tales from users that use it for constipation and it works great as such. Same bottle I have.

I know you cannot read the stars and look at the lines in my hand and foresee magic, but I suspect that warning is there so people don’t start to medicate themselves and perhaps take so much it does damage and week-long loo-time, but wouldn't you say it should be safe enough?

Perhaps there's different types of Castor oil?

    Let's hear your thoughts! :)

Possibly the one you have isn't pure enough for internal use and/or hasn't been tested for purity at all. ?

I've read that it's ok to use internally but it causes stomach cramping. I've read not to use it internally as it was mostly a medieval practice and there are better options now.

If I'm constipated, I just watch an episode of "The View" and that takes care of it.

And besides, don't you have enough oil in your diet already from all the herring and krill? :)

lol, let alone the eels ;)

Let's for fun assume the stuff I have is pure enough, I looked on webmd and the side-effects or possible side effects might tell me why they say external only.

If pure enough it should work. With the possibility of side-effects.

Just wasn't certified food grade. Ingest at your own risk. I have a couple of liters of castor oil in the pantry cuz im full of...uh I make soap with it. It's a very inexpensive, though "harsh" laxative.

People did many weird stuff in the past :-/

This describes the usage pretty good. http://www.wikihow.com/Relieve-Constipation-With-Castor-Oil

The one I have might not be pure enough. Hence the external only. Not that it might kill me to do it anyways. Not that I have a problem at all. But should it occur in the future it's good to know if it can be used or not. I'll check up on it.

Epsom Salt (MgSO4 + 7(H2O) ) in water is a safer choice for home remedy.

One of those home remedies my great-grandparents swore by. Come to think of it, though, they probably also swore by leaching. Huzzah for modern medicine.

I have never heard of it, so I had to google it. Looks to be fairly available here. Does it work? The "cousin" magnesium oxide does not work one bit, but perhaps this it much more different?

Safer, I do like the sound of that :)

Make sure you are using Mg2SO4, called Epsom Salt in USA.

It is a saline laxative. "milk of magnesia" is made from this chemical. Epsom Salt is also used hot bath water to sooth muscles, and is also a plant fertilizer. Very versatile stuff to keep in the pantry.

I think the danish word is "bitter salt". I found some online stores here that carries it and also labels it "epsom salt". They list it with the properties and uses that you just described. So I think it's the right one. I'll track it down locally though. We're almost out of bath salt, so at least that could be one of the uses.

I buy it in ten pound bags and use it in a hot soak often.

This reminds me of when I was in high school I worked in a hardware store, I would restock the WD40 daily.
One day an older gentleman came in and asked where the WD40 was, now I knew what WD40 common usage was for but I thought I'd throw out a bone to this older gentleman. Sir, what do you plan on using the WD40 for? He said that he sprayed it on his joints, elbows, knees. :shocked003: Sir:signs002: it works great! :shocked029:

And the Danes are supposed to be polite. "Hey, here is oil pressed from deadly poisonous beans (castor bean = ricin) and it gives you cramps. Let's blame it on the Americans! :lyrtuy5:"

I dunno, maybe there is some truth to that. IMO, the external castor oil is the same as the oil to be used internally, the companies labeling for internal use may have to protect themselves against litigation. Here are the Active Ingredients from bottles labeled for internal and external use:
    Same store, Walgreens Pharmacy

    U.S.P Castor Oil Stimulant/Laxative
    Ricinus Communis (Castor) OilStimulant Laxative

Heritage Store Castor Oil, The Palma Christi, Recommended in the Edgar Cayce (psychic healer) Readings
