With all of the equipment I've acquired, I could easily go 4 years and not need to spend a penny. I could be in on this. I just need to make the most of what little time remains in 2015. Hmm... One more razor, a couple of brushes, a couple hundred more blades...
Kerry, You are wise beyond your years. My struggle with acquiring soaps is well documented in this forum. I have PIF'd a bunch and could PIF more...yet, find myself buying another. I like the "Never let things........." words. I sincerely have enough soap to last a life time and I really do not have that many. I included some nice chunks of soaps with the Semogue brushes I recently PIF'd. Two soaps more gone. I sent some Jim's (Da Brush Man) way. I tossed a cream today that was not appealing any longer. Could someone really go a year with out acquiring any new gear? An interesting and challenging situation.
This is not for everyone. This is for those who have an abundance of products, many of us have goods that he we haven't used. I've realized that my hobby has gotten to become an obsession with acquiring the next best thing. I LOVE wet shaving! I spring out of bed to start my day knowing that I have fantastic gear waiting for me, I LOVE being apart of TSD! I don't love the chase. Will it be difficult? Yes. Very. And when it gets difficult, I'll go and smell a soap. I'll shop here when I have the urge.
I sort of fell into a year long no-buy that started with no-buy-july. When July was over I had no urge to buy anything. I have enough blades, enough soaps, after shave, pre-shave, brushes, and anything else you could want.
How positively Buddhist of you Once (if) I truly settle on THE final den inventory, I might say the same. But not yet. I wonder if there are phases to go through in wet shaving. I would say I'm more in the early exploratory/acquisition phase. The vintage razors I get are not the prime examples, it's more about trying out and finding my favorites, before perhaps moving on to COLLECTING unblemished versions (or having the blemished ones replated). The shaving itself is certainly enjoyable - those 15 mins of morning meditation - but in part this joy is related to shaving using new razors, brushes, soaps, creams. For now, at least. But I'm only a year in.
I think I'm doing the No buy 2016-2018. I'm not confident I will make it hahaha, but I have some good motivation. I will need o buy Nivea aftershave balm, I will probably need to buy 100 pack of Personna lab blue, I have a lot of Astra SP thanks to @RaZorBurn123 but I have kind of lost the love I had for them. They are a bit harsh on my Skin and personna gives me better shaves
There should be some badge or medal given out to those who can deliberately go without buying anything (apart from consumables like blades if one truly run out) in 2016. That's some willpower especially being part of such an enabling community.
Yes there are phases that I went through along my wet shaving journey, and when I look back everything goes back to lack of my technique. My lack of technique cause me to sell/trade razor that I now rebought at a higher price. Once I bought my Mongoose SE razor everything changed for me, I now had the razor I had always wanted! I discovered that I really liked vintage TTO Gillette's and sold or traded most of my modern razors. My biggest phase has been aftershave's, I'm an aftershave junkie!! Take a minute and smell your soap.
Does "No Buy 2016" mean everything? No soaps, blades, razors, brushes, aftershaves, mugs/bowls/scuttles may be acquired? You must only use existing gear in 2016? Just trying to understand the rules. Thanks................
That's generally how it works. Order a couple hundred blades now and you are set. Less than $20 for two packs of Astra Superior Platinums on Amazon.
I generally get four shaves from a blade so that means I will need 92 blades in 2016. I have a 160 blade mix of Feather/Baili/Ladas so blades will not be an issue even if I get a cull in the mix. I have not bought blades in a long time....blade AD has never been an issue for me and I have given away a bunch of the Baili and Ladas blades. Additionally, I acquired a number of LE badgers from some other shave forums and have a nice set of luxurious brushes, so no brushes next year. Kind of like Jed......why would I move when I got so much? With the shave gear I have, why should I get more?
I have enough blades for a year or 2. I have enough soap for that long if I use up the 4 pucks of Williams. I have enough brushes and razors to deal with near every shave. On top of that I have straights and the rolls that could last forever. I might need aftershave before the end of year but only because I like balms better then splashes. I could make it for a year or more if I had to but I hope that my employment situation will change and allow me to buy more. I enjoy the purchase and the variety of each day when I have more products. I'm still in M searching phase of wetshaving. I don't have more then 10 of any one blade but I have over 150 blades. Most of those are single blades. I have samples of soaps and not many full size containers. I have just a few aftershaves. I'd like to start getting samples of those. There are only a few razors I want to try and a few more I want to collect. Maybe year after next I can do this but not this year.
I can participate the next 5 years with no need to get anything. Will I do 2016? I am not sure. I like something new once in a while. Let's see how December goes
I just went to check. I have over 500 blades. I use each blade twice, so 500 blades will last me about 2 and 3/4 years. I bought them at about $7.00 / 100 when the Russian Ruble dropped. About the only thing I could conceivably run out of is TOBS Rose shaving cream. I use it a lot mixed with something else and after having the jar almost a year already, it is only about 1/2 full.
