What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

Lou, tell me of your impressions as you work off the Gukomyo 20k.... feedback, did you lap it? slurry first or just water?; number of strokes/laps....

 

I'm jealous. This is one razor I'd like that I don't have.

 

They pop up once in the while but seldom als big als this one, and when they do you have to be very fast to acquire it.

Yes, I lapped it but my DMT is not any good any more so I used a body shop sanding block with wet 320 sandpaper, then I dressed the stone with the 400 grit cleaner eraser that comes with each one. It is very hard so lapping was slow. When applying the steel to it after the 12k it seems smooth as glass in just a few strokes. I did 40 X strokes. I refreshed 12 razors all of which were shave ready prior to this. 8k Snow White 40 X( this is a dandy stone that I really love and another Jamie Mahoney reccomendation) 12k 40 X, then 20k 40 X. I have tested 6 of them and all are a keener edge than I have ever been able to produce. My shaves since have been closer and smoother than before. The hard areas that I have due to my tough as hell beard came out BBS with two passes. Prior to now I did 4 passes and the neck under jaw line was never BBS, just acceptable. I would not hesitate to buy the Gukumyo and feel the $237 shipped was a bargain

I don't own a Escher, Thurigian or Coticule so I cant say that the 20K is better but Jamie believes it is and he has a lot of knowledge. Not sure if Glen or Lynn have a 20K either

Thanks for your observations, Lou! I do appreciate hearing your first-hand experiences with the stone.
My only hesitation in taking the Gokumyo plunge—despite the good amount of praise it has received from a number of TSD members—is the comment made by Glen regarding my 'current' finisher in this thread I started last September. He borrowed my apache for several weeks and did about 100 razors and came way very impressed with the edges. Between the apache and the blue Escher I use, I'm still on the fence about plunking down more moolah on yet another hone…tempting as it may be.

Decisions, decisions…...

 

I totally understand and have to say that the edge you put on my Boehler Stahl was as good as it gets

 

today I used my;
JAHenckels Twin Works #81, is a 4/8 full hollow with a round end. I touched it up on apache strata and stropped on drygultch custom strop.
I made three passes for a good shave, cleaned up with my slim for a great shave.

I don't know anything about this razor. It's unmarked in every way except for some jimping on the tang. It's not quite sharp enough so Ill attempt to finish it with a barbers hone before tomorrows shave. I still managed near BBS in 2 Passes. N/S with the straight and S/N with the rolls. Minor touch up under the nose and jawline. Gave up on the baby because of didn't want to hurt myself.

First time with both the soap and brush. La Toja had such rave reviews that I decided to try it since I missed the Post office being opened today. I didn't like the scent in the jar it was in but after I lathered it I found a very clean soapy scent with a bit of something sweeter. This is my 2nd badger brush and since the first one was so disappointing I was surprised at how soft, how fast it loaded and how well it lathered up. This brush is @Jayaruh #8 I traded for yesterday. I normally face lather but today I bowl lathered in an old spice mug since I was unsure of the performance of both soap and brush. I was amazed.

I finished up with my home mixed menthol lemongrass WH and a few sprays of Citrus Musk. The menthol was pleasantly chilly and the citrus musk didn't feel too bad afterwards.

 

I still get the best ever shaves from this Iwasaki. No idea why. I've got five other J-wests with the same blade shape, grind, ergos, etc. and this one consistently beats 'em all.

With one of my three new Bushcraft brushes. First use, so not much bloom yet.

 

I might have to break down and buy one, though my money lately has been going into cameras and lenses.

 

Get while the gettin' is good LH! I've seen some nice ones available the last couple of months at lower prices than ever.
