Late night pipe, Sam Gawith Full Virginia Flake in a Neerup poker, one of my favorite pipes. I had dried the entire tin a few months ago and jarred. As Chris recently posted, prep of FVF is a pain. The thickness of the flakes makes rubbing out difficult, and you wind up with smaller chunks versus what I would consider truly rubbed flake. But, if you can handle the prep, FVF is an excellent tobacco. I find the flavor to be particularly satisfying. Not a really strong flavor, naturally sweet but not overly so, and no nic kick to speak of. I used 1/2 flake, and it lasts a good hour and a half. Tony
Hey Lior, glad to see you getting back to your pipes! The MM cobs can't be beat for the money. Orlik GS flakes are also great, glad you like it. Have you tried the Stokkebye Bullseye flakes yet? I've really been enjoying the blade and cream sampler you put together for me, especially the Gillette blades. I put those on my Christmas wish list. I'm going to say yes......I feel so incredibly stupid right now. When I bought it from the shop that's how it was displayed and I never really thought about it. Wow......and to think I've smoked it in public like that. Lol I wonder how many people caught that and just shook their heads.
I'm looking at tobaccos trying to make a Christmas list for my fiance. Can anyone suggest tobaccos of different flavor types since I haven't tried very many?
Right now I have the three Pipa flavors since they get decent reviews on tobaccoreviews.com and my fiance likes the picture of the package. I'm happy because they come with a pipe. I also have an ounce each of Peter Stokkebye Lux Navy Flake and Norwegian Blend. Its a good bit for not a lot of money. I also have some different flavors in there that I haven't tried before. I'm hoping the Pipa has a nice room note so I can smoke it in the car without dirty looks from the other front seat.
Before I make any specific recommendations, give a quick run down of what you've tried. Maybe let us know if you've developed any preferences between types, as in aromatic, straight Virginia, VaPers, English, Scottish, etc. The last P&C catalog has a page toward the front where you can put together a bulk sampler package for not a lot of money. If cost right now is a factor, maybe we can find some good bulks for you to try.
I've had mostly store brands: Prince Albert, Paladin Black Cherry, a few Captain Black blends and OGS. The OGS is really good and the Captain Black Gold is less good but makes my fiance happier because it smells good. The Paladin I tried was old and too dry as was the old dusty pouch of Prince Albert. I'm mostly wanting to try new things to get a better idea of what I like. I saw that the Stokkebye navy flake is highly recommended and since I have never tried anything with Perique I thought it was a good choice. I changed my mind about the Norwegian blend and changed it to English Luxury #17. I don't know if I my fiance will want to change the Pipa flavors out since they come with Missouri Meerschaum pipes. She likes the package and its a good value for the pipe and I get some free tobacco with it. She is the one getting for me so I guess I'll see what she gets after I throw out my suggestions. I really don't have any preference yet since I don't feel like I have smoked enough different tobaccos to develop them.
I had a bowl of chili for dinner, and for some reason Squadron Leader seemed like a perfect after dinner tobacco, so I had a bowl in a MM Legend corncob sitting next to the firepit.
That Savinelli is such a large bowl I haven't fired it up yet. That said, they should work just like paper. I've never used charcoal. I will let you know!
I have an update from my fiance. She wants a sizable wish list from me so she can pick and choose stuff making it a surprise for me. As it sits I would know what she got because I made the list and its at the price point we decided on. So I'll be adding more it looks like and a clay pipe is the first addition.
Orlik Golden Mixture is a softer style, and it's much like Capt Black in aroma. That's the cavendish smell. Orlik Golden Mixture is not the same as Golden Sliced.
Lane 1-Q is a quality bulk similar to Capt Black. Try Orlik Golden Mixture as well, also Orlik Racing Green might be a winner with the fiancé.
Out of curiosity, Whats the largest amount of a single tobacco has any of you bought? I noticed that some of the bulks are sold by the 1 1/2 pound box and wondered how many people bought them.
