But a batch up to steep this afternoon! Didn't have any vodka so I used white tequila. Hope it turns out ok.

Hmm.. As long as it doesn't smell like a night out on the town, then it should be ok =)

Okay - so I tried to make my first Aftershave today ;) Here's what I used:

    as1.jpg

    - half cup of Rum
    - quarter cup of Witch Hazel
    - a tablespoon of Glycerine
    - 15 drops of sweet orange oil
    - 10 drops of bay oil
    - a teaspoon of crushed clove
    - a teaspoon of crushed allspice
    - a teaspoon of crushed cinnamon
    - 5 drops of tea tree oil
    - 5 drops of vanilla extract

so finally it looked like this:

I'll let it sit now for a week or two and then strain it. Been thinking about the alcohol content though ... the Rum I used is just 40% ... will that be sufficient?

I saw vanilla beans being used in a recipe for bay rum somewhere on the Internet. if I ever get time I'm going to throw a batch together. I can't seem to find the proper bay leaves.

I feel your pain, I'm in Canada, rum and vodka is far from cheap here!

So.. how did I fare this time?

Quite well! A bit more zing from the alcohol, a bit more dark color and fuller scent with a faint undertone of lime. I don't think it's possible to overdo the lime this way.

I excluded aloe vera gel this time and ended up using ½ tsp of vitamin E and glycerin, nothing else to moist. And it works absolutely great. We have cold frosty weather and very low humidity inside these days (well the frosty is outside, mind you!) and I haven't felt a lack of moisturizing properties. It still comes a bit out of solution, but it's very easy to shake in again before use.

I already have a third mixture in mind. This time with 96% pure spirit alcohol instead of the vodka. To overcome the oils separating.

Thinking about doing a bay rum using sailor Jerry's spiced rum. It's 46% alcohol. Also thinking about switching out the orange EO for bergamot. Any thoughts?

I have added some vanilla sticks to my last batch and made a small sample. I'm really liking the results. Great great scent.

Next batch is soon due, so I'll make it with vanilla this time. Can't wait to get started, it's so fun! :D

My batch of aftershave went bad. It had a milky scum on top of it

Isn't that just the oils separating?

@HolyRollah - have your tried various other commercial bay rum splashes? If so, how does your homemade splash smell in comparison, eg. far off or pretty close?
