Sodium Borate in TSD soaps

I was going through the list of ingredients in TSD soaps, checking each of them through Skin Deep and the only ingredient that raised my concern was Sodium Borate (aka Borax) that has moderate hazard score of 4-6 (I must say that all other ingredients are very "clean"). I was wondering what is the concentration of Borax in the soap?

    Thanks!

I'm not a soap maker but those "skin deep" people are a bunch of whiny hippies who complain about everything being toxic and horrible for you. I can assure you that whatever borax is in TSD soaps is in there in a miniscule quantity that it will have no negative effects on your skin.

I appreciate that people are hesitant regarding borax, but it is a common perseravtive and I haven't had any problems with any of te TSD soaps. I guess my skin isn't extremely sensitive, but I use the TSD soaps frequently without any problems.

I'm sure JoAnna will get back to you soon with further information!

Borax makes up less than 1% of TSD soaps.

While I'm not a "whiny hippie" I don't like chemicals in my stuff either, and I know a lot of other people around here don't either. That being said, I don't think borax is anything to worry about. I've read tons of threads about soaking a dirty badger brush in borax to clean it. Plus, it's used in lots of products to wash clothing.

I'm no chemist, so I don't know why it would be used in a soap, but I'm sure it has its purpose.

Sodium Borate is a thickening ingredient in soap. I read that a given concentration of Sodium Borate has the same degree of soap filling as twice the concentration of Sodium Silicate or Magnesium Sulfate. All are types of salt so I'd take it that less is better - the lessor of evils as tiny as that evil may be.

It is also an organic emulsifier in oil and water formulations.

I have had zero issues with ANY of TSD soaps I use.

My only issue is that I'm slightly addicted to them... I doubt I can blame that on anything but their greatness! I have a cabinet full of them!

I think I'm the kooky one here in that I'm paring down the soaps and creams I do have by using up one at a time until they're gone before I buy anymore.

Currently I've been trying to use up a tub of Taylor of Old Bond St. "Shaving Shop" cream. With daily use, it's lasted me months and months and I STILL can't see the bottom of the tub yet! It's not the worst soap I've had but after it's gone I can say I've used it but wouldn't buy it again.

I'm actually considering thinning out my collection as well. Since I'm pretty broke I think I'd be better getting a few things I absolutely love and leaving it there. I'll always have a few TSD soaps though :D

I don't want to come across wrong, but I have soaps and creams to last me a lifetime and a half, but I still have things I want to try... I give to Greenpeace and Unicef each month and I'm at a point in life where I can afford to "pamper" myself, so I think I'll get some more soaps and creams...:p I hope you all will get there too! (If you're not already there ;))

No, you're not the only one. Periodically, I dedicate time to a certain range of products to either use them up (finally!) or at least put a dent in their weight/volume.

Maybe it's because you are simply a fish and I am a comedic man of the cloth ... or at least I play one in my avatar.

Borax can also work as a water softener which might help those of you with hard water.
