Nothing compares to New England, lol. Mark Twain once said, "If you don't like the weather in New England.....wait a minute.". lmao
It is good stuff. I grabbed two tins; but one is for aging, so I'm trying to make the open one last a while. lol
After dinner, Lane 1-Q in a Lorenzo Novara Studio bent billiard. This is a nice pipe I got off fleabay, the seller had cleaned it up nicely so I decided to try it after a some sweetener and a cleaner in the airway indicated it was clean. The seller said this was a large pipe, and he was right. It's in very nice condition, and smoked very well. Here it is next to my Lorenzo Novara Standard Lovat for comparison.
I always prefer sitting outside, but it gets cold enough here in the middle of winter that even in the basement I have to fire up a heater.
I'm in good shape on the first and last. I have given some thought to buying some liquor for this express purpose. Don't forget that salt was used as currency in biblical times. I don't go crazy with prepping, but we did live through a short apocalypse of sorts back in April 2011, when an F4 tornado ripped through the middle of Pleasant Grove, taking out about 1/4 of the homes and damaging many more. Only 12 killed, but hundreds injured. Our church served about 32,000 meals over 17 days during that ordeal. Looting was rampant, and the National Guard was called out along with a considerable number of state troopers and other law enforcement. We in essence had martial law for some time out of necessity. This same scenario was playing out in several communities in the south after this tornado outbreak, but especially so in Alabama. So I've had a taste of it, but then things were restored relatively quickly. But this episode did open my eyes to the possibility that a catastrophe could occur for an extended period.
I've been wanting to try a meerschaum. I heard mixed reviews about AND Meerschaum, some people got pipes they liked, some didn't, and the meerschaum afficionados always say the only good meerschaum costs $200+. I found this one on fleabay for $18.99 and free shipping, which seemed like a good gamble. The same pipe directly from AND would be about $45 plus about $16 for shipping I think. I don't know how the seller came across this, it was the only pipe in his store which had a lot of stuffed animals. It has a little chip on the top rim, at about the 12:00 position on the top photo. The first smoke was with Viprati, and it smoked real nice. I followed with OGS and Lane 1-Q after allowing the pipe to cool between bowls. It's a small bowl, takes about half a flake of OGS and a little under 30 minutes to smoke, but I see this will be a regular in my rotation.
After dinner, Viprati in a rusticated pipe (half bent billiard?) marked The Tinderbox, Lugano, Made in Italy. I don't know who made this for The Tinderbox, but it's a very nice pipe. It fits the hand very well and is an excellent smoker. Below is a pic of the pipe inside with better light.
Lancers slices has been my go to the last couple of days. It was something I got in a PIF and I think I'll continue to have on hand. Seems to be a very well made blend.
Its snowing so no pipe for me. I'm not willing to be that cold for that long. I would try hurrying and burn my tongue.
