    Shave of the Day

Upon Further Testing... (First Shave of the Year)

Prep: cold water splash, Stirling Eucalyptus soap
    Razor: Gillette Red Tip
    Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (1)
Brush: New Forest 2204 HMW Badger
    Lather: Chiseled Face Redneck
Shave: Cold water shave, face lather, 3 passes; WTG, XTG, ATG
Post: cold water splash, alum, Nivea Iced Sensitive Balm, Stetson Cooling Moisture splash

So sticking with the Red Tip, face felt good enough for a shave today, I was eager to get going. I tried the GSB tonight and had much better results than with the 7 O'Clock Platinum. Even the ATG pass didn't tug. I experimented a bit with the "slide" maneuver and got stunning results on my trouble area on my neck. I need to keep trying that, and remember which way I'm doing it, because I got tug free pain free ATG passes on my neck which is very hard to do. A little irritation again tonight, I'm not going to shave tomorrow, to give my skin a break. This razor once again, is deceptively aggressive. I love it though, it really is a great razor, I just need to tame it!

Good morning folks - and a Happy New Year to you all.

My first shave in 2016, first day of 2-band-badger and OC focus:

    focus1.jpg
    - Stirling Barbershop
    - WD High Mountain Badger
    - Merkur 15c
    - Polsilver SI
    - Tüff sensitiv After Shave

I have to admit: I'm a little out of practice with these badger brushes, because I used boars almost exclusively the last few months. I think the boars are just very convenient for my approach to lathering: I let them soak in warm water for a few minutes, give them just one little shake, load a good amount of soap and lather away on my face. 95% of the time it works without adding any more water and I get very nice lather for about 3 passes.

With the badger today I took a different road: I did not soak the brush (first mistake) and tried the dry loading method (second mistake). The brush was very prickly on the first pass and the amount of lather I produced was barely sufficient for 2 passes. The soap itself is really good - though the scent is just a little too sweet and intense for my liking. But slickness and especially post-shave feel ist excellent.

The Merkur 15c is a VERY mild razor. While I loved that at the beginning of my wet shaving career, I guess I prefer a little more aggressiveness now. You don't have to worry about hurting yourself with the Merkur, but at the same time I think the stubble reduction on the first pass is not quite as good as with many of the other razors I own. Which results in a slightly more rough second pass X/ATG. And in much more cleanup work after the second pass, which effectively turned this into a 4-5-pass-shave in some areas of my face and neck.

On the plus side: no cuts, nicks or anything - the Aftershave did not burn at all. Final verdict: a DFS, closeness B+, irritation A+

I'll try to concentrate on razor handling more tomorrow, maybe I can get a closer shave with a less narrow angle. And I will definitely soak the brush before use and switch to the wet loading method. I'll stick to the Polsilver blade for now, but maybe I'll try a feather for the second half of the week.

I wanted to read this to see how this open comb performs. It sounds interesting. Doesn't more aggressiveness mean more cuts and nicks?

Well - effectiveness is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think about the 15c ;) It's even milder than the CC Merkurs, my 34c for example.

Next friday I'll switch the Merkur for my Gillette New LC - only shaved once with that one before, but as far as I remember the shave was really good and definitely more efficient.

    Hi Friends,

i hope everyone of you had a good start in 2016. Endless health and wealth to all of you.

    Here now my shave

Saponificio Varesino Felce Aromatica / Mongoose w. Jürgen Hempel Handle / Feather Pro Guard / Rubberset Replica w. 25mm Shavemac Silvertip / Figaro Monsieur AS

My first shave of the new year and then such a wonderful one. The soap is trusted so i knew what to expect. Great scent and excellent lather. The biggest surprise was the brush. The knot is absolutely phenomenal. It created such a wonderful lather, holds water very well and releases the lather wonderfully. If i need a knot for a handle in the future, i know where to buy it. Speechless about the softness in the tips.

The Aftershave matches very nice with the soap. For my nose it has a great mix of Oranges, Citrus und Menthol. Nice cooling kick. Comparable with the green Proraso.

So, this was it for now. Hope you are fine and will have an awesome year. Let´s all be a bit more thankful or humbled for what we have.

    Greetings
    Thorsten

My first shave of 2016 was a delight - it's so easy to get "obsessed" with the Obsessive Soap Perfectionist's stuff because it's so good. In my honest opinion it kicks the high-end English soaps, like the 3 T's out of the park. The Bay Rum soap which I used today smells so nice, it lathers like a demon, and it's very skin-friendly. The Bay Rum from Mr Brian Krampert is such a beautifully-scented aftershave which moisturizes so well and feels awesome. A special thanks to Mr Rod Lovan of Stirling Soaps is also in order - his preshave soap softens the stubble to make a great shave so much easier. A splash of the Burt's Bees Bay Rum cologne, and I'm in scent heaven for the day! :) :happy088:

Enjoy this New Year's Day, folks!

That is correct. I got it in a trade with Ed, @Redrock, for my Gillette Black Tip W4. With all the Jayaruh brushes around it has not been getting its share of love, so I am giving it the first week of 2016.

A fine shave to start a new year. The SRE brush is quickly becoming my favorite, that is until I use a different brush. Seriously though, the SRE is (for me) a fantastic brush that could easily be my one and only. Loving the Cade SS also. Wonderful scent/lather. Now go enjoy your day folks.
