I hinted a week ago that I would be trying out another Schick that was higher up in the series than my birth year Type I. I'd like to unveil a newly acquired "O" but, no, that is not the case.
The oddity that broke the firewall is the short handled Type K. You may remember seeing this one in some past posts from @
Billyfergie. However, I'd never seen one offered for sale until very recently. It was listed as a modified razor that someone had inexplicably cut down. When I contacted the seller I learned that she had mistook it and she had the medallion and the case but hadn't realized it was intended to be that length or that the medallion fit as a cap on the end and the three pieces actually did belong together. She agreed to sell all the pieces to me at her original BIN price.
So, today's shave review is the K3 which showed up in my mailbox yesterday.
The first question was what to load her with. My inclination was to use a Personna as that paired so well with her cousin, the Type H. I also figured it would spice up what was likely a milder razor. The Blademaster -

- recommended a NOS Schick, perhaps a Krona. Foolishly, I went with my inclination and put in the Personna. I suspect the Personna is just a little too much for the K3. However, the immediate reaction to the first strokes was, "Wow, these Hydro-Magic heads really are smooth." And smooth it was. So on I went with happy abandon. Halfway through the first pass I noticed I had left a couple of weepers in that difficult area between my lip and chin. "Hmmm, how did that happen?", I thought.
The first pass provided really good whisker reduction and no more weepers. The second pass was as smooth as the first and was otherwise uneventful. Again, really good whisker reduction. The third pass left a few more weepers in the goatee area and upper lip. There was minimal wet touch up needed and, although I had a really close shave, my face could have been happier with the final treatment. I used some Osma Alum Block and it confirmed that it was a little too close - but fortunately not as bad as I had feared.
I played around a bit with using the rinsing lever mid shave to clean out some accumulated lather that wasn't rinsing easily. I was less than impressed as this didn't seem to make rinsing it off significantly easier.

I'm generally in favor of "the-fewer-moving-parts-the-better" so this could simply be confirmation bias.
So, what do you call a razor that is silky smooth and aggressive but likely to bite under the radar so to speak? I don't know. That's why my hunch is that the Personna is likely the culprit here - it may be just over the line for this razor. There is one other possible cause and I may be unfairly blaming the Personna. I forgot to use my pre-shave oil today and that has always been a factor in weepers when I've done that before. Only time will tell. In the meantime, here's the unexpected prize that was my last purchase of 2015:
Bio Palmyra Shaving Cream
Savile Row 3824
