Shave of the Day Prep: hot shower, homemade PSO Razor: Gillette SS Red Tip Blade: Voskhod (1) Brush: Rubberset 400-4 Silvertip Lather: RazoRock XXX Shave: hot shave; face lathering; 3 passes; WTG, XTG, ATG; slide on neck Post: alum, L'Occitane Cade shave balm I reached for the Red Tip again, trying to perfect the technique and find a suitable blade. Tonight I chose the Voskhod, a Russian blade that seems to have worked in almost every razor I've tried. I also chose RR XXX because of its ease of lather and good cushion and slickness. I opted to do a pre shave oil tonight, a homemade variety, that would hopefully help protect my skin better on the last pass. My findings: the Voskhod is a winner in this razor. I never experienced any tugging, burning, or irritation during the shave. In fact it was one of the most perfect feeling shaves I've ever had. I implemented the slide technique during my 3rd pass, something I usually don't do, and had great results. I could have stopped after the 3rd pass and not done any touchups but I wanted to see if I could get perfection. It was just a matter of figuring out which way to slide my razor. Let me explain. My beard and sensitive skin don't allow me to go directly ATG on my lower neck. I have to sneak up on it so to speak. So I have started experimenting with the slide maneuver on my mid to lower neck and have found promising results. But I have to figure out which way to position the razor and slide because if I do it wrong it still feels like I'm going ATG. I finally had something figured out by the end of the shave but I had irritated a few spots some. But I think it's worth it. Its like advanced beard mapping or something. Will be using the same setup next shave.
Congrats on solving the Red Tip! I am interested to read about the "youngunn slide" as you work it out.
I love trying new techniques, or learning about how they work. Everything at happens in my shaves is an amalgamation of everything I've ever seen on TSD.
Sounds like if you tried that SR it would be the "finishing touch." My favorite shave videos to watch are the ones from geofatboy, but Mantic should be a prerequisite for trying DE.
Florena was the cream I started my DE shaving career with. Inexpensive and available in every supermarket around here. If you ever need a replacement for yours, just let me know The Omega 49 is a great brush - it was just a bit too big for my taste, that's why I PIFed it. I hope the new owner gives it a good home
Love my 24 WD HM Badger - though my handle is not as fancy as yours At the end of this month I should have figured out whether or not I like the WD even better than the SOC.
It's basically the "Gillette slide" as mantic calls it in his advanced techniques video. I'm just manipulating it around in different directions to work for me. Once I get it down I'll post something about what I'm doing.
Congratulations on your second successfull straight razor shave Thought about trying that myself, but no ... I won't follow the dark path
Good Morning fellow Shave Denizens, today's SOTD as follows; Pearl SSH-01 head/SABI T-1 handle. Personna Platinum Chrome blade. Chinese Badger Hair brush. Rays of Colorado (Rays 'ol Spiced) shaving soap. Avon Mesmerize after shave conditioner. Avon Mesmerize cologne. The first pass with this combo reminded me with two bleeders how aggressive this set up is. But I stuck with it for a two pass ultra BBS! Man my face is smooth! This is truly a winning combination. Here's the photo- I hope everyone has a blessed Sunday!
GOOD SUNDAY MORNING TSD!! SOTD 01/03/15 Razor-Rolls Viscount Pre Shave Oil-E-Shave Lather-E-Shave Orange Sandalwood Brush-E-Shave Badger Three Passes-Wtg,Xtg,Atg(some touch up) Post Shave-Cold Water Rinse Witch Hazel,E-Shave Orange Sandalwood PSB I must say the shave with the Rolls was very pleasant, the lather was very slick and rich from the E-Shave cream.
