Good morning everyone - my Sunday shave: - Portus Cale Black Edition - WD High Mountain Badger - Merkur 15c - Polsilver SI (#3) - Tüff sensitiv Rasierwasser Picture from the manufactuer's website I ordered a sample of that Portus Cale Soap a while ago at shavedash.com and used it only once since then. I thought it irritated my skin, but I wanted to give it a second chance now. Well - as much as I want to like it, I can't. Which is a pity, because it lathers easily, offers very good protection and slickness and the scent is absolutely fantastic. I'd go as far as to say this is the best smelling shaving soap I know. But it seems as if some ingredient does not agree with my skin - after the shave my face felt pretty tense and a little itchy. On the plus side: that's one more soap I don't have to buy Other than that, today's shave was actually a very good one. Looks like XTG and ATG is the way to go with the Merkur 15c. Two passes with some minor touchups resulted in a mostly BBS face - very nice. And apart from the irritation caused by the soap everything else was fine, no burning from the Aftershave. Have a great Sunday
Your razor looks awesome! I love the open comb and with that handle it's a wining combo. It just looks angry.
Thanks Robyflexx, that is an awesome combination. The handl has just the right weight, and balance for the Pearl head, and the two go together wonderfully. Angry? I suppose so! But it's too bad the handles are no longer available. The vendor closed its doors awhile ago. It is an awesome handle, and it suits that head perfectly.
01/03/2016 Razor – Cobra Classic Blade – Feather Pro (4) Brush – Rubberset 400-3 with WSP HMW Lather – TSD Signature Post - Witch Hazel followed by Captain’s Choice Bay Rum
Ah, that felt so good - a nice, smooth, soothing shave with my Florena cream which had been calling my name for so long. Germany sure knows how to produce great shaving stuff, and this cream is one of them. Rod's pre-shave soap set the stage for this BBS shave and the Polar Ice aftershave completed it so nicely. I would say that the Derby blade earned its retirement after serving me faithfully for a whole week! @Marverel-That's so nice of you, my friend. When I'm about to finish this tube I'll be glad to let you know and I'll be more than happy to send you something good in return!
Fresh and Superb I used GreenShave soap as a pre shave today, since I dropped and broke my bottle of Annie Jones PSO last night. I should have done this long ago! GreenShave is an excellent soap, loaded with shea butter, and it makes a fantastic pre shave as well. I just smeared a little on my face and lathered Seville over it. These products worked together to create optimal lather to set up my stubble for its grim Futur. Three passes on 5.5 with a Voskhod levels me with a drama free BBS, which I finished with Fine Platinum. My face feels great and I'm ready for church.
We can debate what blades, soaps, etc give us the smoother shaves and post shave feel. What never fails me, though, is taking one day off from shaving. Saturday was spent largely outside with my daughter after a quick shower. Sunday is shavin'day. Lathering up a Strop Shoppe sample, two passes with a Merkur slant, finishing with pure jojoba and a drop of eucalyptus - one fine shave and one fine post shave feel! Zero burns, redness; just that smooth Sunday feeling Bid you all a good one!
Sunday In Denmark we have a wordplay that goes something along "Stop while the game's funny". Usually uttered towards children playing wild games. Today's shave with the 4 day old Rapira was NOT funny. I felt something yesterday that I thought was bad prep or something but that was just the blade starting to dull. I usually go much longer on a Swedish Super Steel before it dulls. Maybe a dud? What WAS funny then, was the brush! Oh my God... softest tips ever felt and with the backbone of an Omega boar. Great weight to the handle with the added steel shims under the knot. All in all it feels perfect. This is not my last synthetic, that's for sure! We have a stormy 20 m/s wind today with -5 degrees, so no menthol, only the warm and nice Bay rum to finish it off. DFS+++
Very cool saying! I love learning idioms of different cultures. A rough equivalent in America would be "get while the getting is good"
Just be aware that the Whipped Dog seems to be pretty unique as far as synthetic brushes go - much more backbone than most. As a face latherer and boar brush enthusiast I really like my 24mm WD, but sold or gave away all the others I owned (Omega S-Brush, Plisson, Stirling, Fauxmere), because they were either too soft/floppy or too springy for my taste. Someone on the german forum called the Plisson a "shaving rag", because it has absolutely zero backbone What I haven't tried yet are Mühles STF brushes and the Ubersoft knot ... maybe I'll buy one of those in the near future to re-knot a Vulfix handle.
SOTD January 3, 2016 Noxema Preshave cream Gillette Heavy Tech / Astra SP Omega / Santa Maria del Fiore WH / Coconute oil / Nivea Sensitive This is my Sunday Wildcard Shave today. This is a nice cream, though it is challenging to lather. I find a combination of hand lathering and face lathering with a fairly wet brush and this brush did it justice. Enjoy your Sunday gents!
I agree. Everytime I use my single ring I'm temped to add it to my normal rotation. I still marvel at the fact that a 98 old razor made by someone born in the late 1800's can, and still preforms as good as any razor in my fleet. It just gives me a thrill.
SUNDAY Early Sunday morning shave with my J-West (Japanese Western-style) Takehana FEON #172. L'Occitane 'Cade' lather. Very smooth shave with near-BBS results. TSD menthol finish. Have a blessed Sunday, all!
Sunday Prep: Warm Shower-Stirling Bath Soap-Pig Trail Soap: Aetolus Sample by Van Yulay Razor: Gillette Slim Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (1) Brush: oscar11 High Mountain White-22mmx48mm Aftershave: Chiseled Face Sherlock WTG-XTG-ATG (adjusted angles for my beard) Aetolus Sample today. 20 seconds to load the oscar11 HMW. Easy, thick, slick, lather. I loaded a new GSB in the Slim. Excellent smooth, close, shave. I finished with Sherlock. Bob
I forgot to mention that this new Omega brush worked very well at whipping up my Florena lather. I can imagine how great it'll be when it's fully broken in. Then I'll be able to use it on my soaps! The brush on the bottom is my Turkish horsehair barbershop which I've been using all along. It's pretty big up close.
