The title pretty much sums it up... anyone have a tallow based shaving soap they really like? I'm looking for some recommendations. Eventually I plan to work with a local artisan to make one, she's kinda awesome with her abilities - but I'd like to try a good one or two first so I could get a comparison.

Want to avoid: Wheat products, oats, rye, hops, and any of the common grains... (I am a celiac and my immune system thinks any gluten is a dangerous enemy and proceeds to attack itself - me). I know Mama Bear Soaps have wheat products in them, well reviewed but on the avoid list for me.

I'm good looking to see whether they have wheat/gluten in them, you don't need to. I'm just looking for good, natural shaving soaps you guys like - to narrow down the options to look at.

    Thank you for your recommendations...

From personal experience, I like a particular tallow soap produced by @soapbuddy . Also know as www.gingersgarden.com. I purchased through Peter & Evelyn Charkalis's shop, shavingshoponline.com. The specially commissioned Acqui di Florida contains Saponified Stearic Acid, Tallow (Sodium Tallowate), Olive (Olea Europaea oil), Coconut (Cocos Nucifera oil), Palm Kernel (Elaeis Guinensis oil), Mango Butter (Mangifera Indica), Castor (Ricinus Communis oil), Beeswax (Cera Alba), & Fragrance. I don't see any hidden grains listed. If you are a fan of Murray & Lanman's Florida Water I would recommend it.

Great soap, but I believe all her soaps are lanolin based, not tallow.
I do like Stirling, and Wet Shaving Products Formula T.

My two favorite soaps happen to contain tallow:

    RazoRock Mudder Focker
Jeeves of Hudson Street Eucalyptus & Spearmint

And yes, Stirling is nice too - and they offer a large variety of scents

Edit: Look for RazoRock soaps on the Italianbarber website, there's a list of ingredients for each soap. And Bryon, the maker of Jeeves soaps, is a member of this forum, so you can ask him what he uses.

Valobra. I have the Unscented, but there are scented varieties as well. Nice soap. A bit pricey, but worth it.

Tabac, Palmolive stick, Arko and Knockoutshave are all excellent tallow based soaps.

Tabac lasts for ages, Knockoutshave is great as well!

Route 66 are Lanolin based. although they are very good.

I would add Mike's to the list. Both Stirling and Mike's have tallow and lanolin. I think WSP is just tallow and Glycerine, no lanolin. In all cases, I would certainly contact the vendors to make sure they are gluten free before purchasing them.

    My tallow recommendations:
Don't get too wrapped up in the whole tallow is superior thing. There're too many very nice all veg soaps out there.

Cold River Soap Works is a good one but Sterling and Mikes are two of my favorite tallow based soaps that should be tried, you can order samples from both companys also.

Did they change formulas. I had one of their soaps about a year ago, but it was vegan.

The Select line is tallow based, and I think thats the only version he was producing for most of 2015.

The Tallow is due to a skin condition I have. Tallow seems to help it much more than the many many other things we've tried. So, since my doctor wants me to use tallow anyway, might as well get a soap based on it? Anyway, that's the reason. Nothing against veg based or other.
