30-day focus with my Schick Type C1 - The Simplified Schick Automatic Razor.

I’ve been testing a variety of blades all month with this razor as I’d like to be comfortable using it as my travel razor.

Shave 17 - prior to hitting the road for a work retreat for the week in the Cascade mountain range of Washington state.

Razor: Schick Type C1
Blade: NOS Schick Twin Injector 1973 (2)
Soap: Saponificio Varesino 70th Anniversary
Brushes! : Rooney 3/3 Faux Ebony - "Super" Silvertip and
Stirling Kong Synthetic



The combination of yesterday's and today's shave have proven to me why this is such a great razor/blade combination. Yesterday's shave was so close that I awoke this morning with minimal growth. This has happened a few times already this month. My reaction has been to go for the one-pass ATG shave.

Maintaining a very light touch (no pressure) and keeping the razor head flat against the face are the keys to a great shave with the C. This one-pass was going very well so I did some buffing on my trouble spots and was rewarded with the closest and smoothest shave since I left carts about 9 months ago. Minimal irritation in those buffing areas, but repaired well with witch hazel, the AS balm and a bit of cream from Gingers Garden.

Eight hours later and I still have that 'dolphin-smooth' skin all over.

Would someone please confirm that facial hair grows at the same rate in the winter as it does in the summer? Because I don't want to wake up from this dream.

Charlie, your question spurred me to do a side-by-side comparison today with the Rooney badger and the Stirling synthetic - one on each side of my face. I've used each of them two or three times on their own before. Am I right to assume a break-in period for the badger? Regardless, They are both great brushes right now.

Based on the side-by-side today:

Softness on face - Stirling
Lather production - Rooney
Water retention - Rooney

Each of those elements really were a remarkably close call and would not have been as distinguishable if I didn't do the side by side. Both are great big brushes and may keep me from needing any other brushes of that type.

 

Thanks for the credit Randy but you know that you eventually clued in on that one. All I did was remind us to start with the simplest of problems / solution and not the most complex. After I had suggested testing certain elements of your technique (re: pressure) you bought up blades.

I've heard of one blade being a dud, but the entire dispenser? That's when we thought to try a dispenser of new Chicks vs whatever old blades you had happened upon. Don't know if others have had experience this way but I usually steer clear of old blades I get with a vintage razor purchase and use just Chicks or NOS blades.

All in all, glad you're back in the pack!
('cause I don't want to be the only one using a Lady E!).

Aw...you are too modest, you helped alot. I also figured also 2 newb brains might equal one good brain.

The prior blade dispenser contained Chick blades. I purchased two dispensers at the same time. This is still troubling to me. Anyway, I'll use the Lady E for a while, then the G. Then...later...the scary E.

How do you like that One Blade razor and how many shaves do you get from a blade?

 

Beautiful Pal you have Karl and glad to hear you are getting some great shaves from it! It sure sounds like you have learned how to coax the shy girl to come out of hiding. I'm still on and off with her, but I am enjoying the challenge of finding her usually. It seems the more of a hurry I'm in the harder it is to find her, but when I do I get a very smooth, pleasant shave. What a fascinating razor though!

You probably already know this, but that isn't just any Auto-Strop - it is a B1, one of the very early models before the "Valet" name was used, circa 1916-1919. It is also one extremely aggressive razor. A Gem MMOC is a pussycat in comparison. I consider the early Auto-Strops to be some of the most aggressive razors in my entire collection. A lapse in concentration will likely result in bloodshed.

They are capable of great shaves, but like you I only break mine out on an occasional basis.

You might want to try one of the later models - they're a lot more well-mannered.

Day two of the Lady and it was very enjoyable. Now that I have a proper blade in her she's very mild. Another comfortable shave. Maybe I'm learning. I have to say that the long handle is easier to navigate with than the shorter injector handles of earlier models.

 

Wednesday's SE shave.

 

I love it. I was getting only 3 shaves with the Feather FHS-10. I'm currently using a despined GEM Super Stainless blade, which is much more economical. After 3 shaves, zero tugging. It should be good for a few more shaves.

Not sure if I ever posted this before. Recently scanned these instructions that I received with a Canadian Schick E5 (black handle)

 

Hard to believe those instructions recommend shaving against the grain and without lather. Ouch.
