Sometimes you might find yourself with an "unintentional collection" due to buying shaving-gear-lots and/or simply from combining scotch and eBay. In my case, as it turns out, it's Shaving mugs/bowl/scuttles. I did a recent count of what I had in that department and ended up with 20 (twenty) of them. Sure, some of them were very deliberate purchases such as my Grand Turk Old Spice mug...or the vintage silver plated ones...but some just "ended up here". Out of these twenty there are really "only" eleven that I want to keep so if I can sell of close to half of them this or next month I will feel a bit 'cleansed' Anyone else ended up with a more or less voluntary collection of shaving mugs, scuttles and bowls? Drag them out, dust 'em of and post a photo or three Mine: Family shot Details if anyone is interested: Mugs 1, 2, 3 Silverplated, vintage shaving mugs Mugs 4, 5 Old spice mugs. 80's blue and The first OS mug - Grand Turk made in Hull Scuttle 6, 7 Both made in England but about 100 years apart Bowls 8, 9 Left: Modern pewter bowl from England, Right: Less modern bowl with mirror. Mugs 10, 11 Didn't realize until I took this photo that the image is on different sides of the mug. Maybe I can sell them as "right" and "left"-handed mugs... Scuttles 12, 13 Left: Wade scuttle made in England, Right: Col Conk "eww" scuttle Bowls 14, 15, 16 Interesting - to me - is that these are probably the plainest bowl I have...but they are the ones that see the most use! From left: French soup bowl ($2 in thrift store), Plastic soup bowl ($1-2 in "Japanese dollar store" and Fitjar soap bowl). Funny how one maybe gravitate towards simplicity. Cups 17, 18, 19, 20 From left: No-name tin can w/ hinged lid, no-name shaving mug, Seaforth mug w/ unused soap and no-name mug with a Merkur MII on the side
You could always Pif one or two of the cheaper ones. Just sayin. Nice collection. I just aquired an Oldspice Ship Friendship mug for $5.
I love your metal mugs, scuttles, and bowls. Since I've seen your hauls , I've been inspired to find some.. Lol unfortunately they are waaaay out of my price range
I don't yet own a scuttle. I've been watching for them in my thrift store travels. I understand the concept; hot water in the bottom compartment keeps the upper warm. What about the holes? Wouldn't the lather drop through?
Lol I've wondered about that too. But I figured the lather is too thick ( or should be) to go through . It just lets the steam come up.. I think
2 different types of scuttles....those "with holes" arnt ment to keep lather warm, they are a water storage and soap holder.
Being an Old Spice junkie #5 and 6 are my favorite. The Cobalt Blue '85 is my daily driver, and regular SOTD prop. It's the biggest OS shave mug so I have extra room to whip up lather with some of my larger brushes. Nice collection, mine are all Old Spice except for my first which is a VDH. Yeah the size of the blue one really surprised me when I got it. I agree though that the size is great for lathering and razor/brush dunking
they are all pretty cool, but I really like the scuttle (#9) that looks like a medieval knights helmet and the bowl with mirrior and brush holder.
Here's a couple from me. I would like to get rid of the one with the lid on the side the ceramic one. And I do have an extra Copper Bowl to get rid of
Excellent collection. Since you want to get rid of a few, please send #3 and #6 to my address. That copper bowl looks great, mate!
I was surprised by the smallness of the Old Spice Mug when I first got one. I had only seen pictures and thought they were bigger.
All but one of my bowls (no scuttles) were intentional. My Old Spice mug came with a brush I wanted. I had a case of SBAD which is in remission (mostly) since I always face lather now. My favorite is from an Asian supermarket: A thrift store find, an old bowl from a restaurant or hotel is thick and great at holding heat for an improvised scuttle: A dollar store find was an old Crabtree & Evelyn bowl/dish. I don't know what product it is from. It's unglazed on the outside and my Provence Sante Green Tree fits perfectly. On the bottom it says ( I think they got this from Darkbulb):
