Who work clean this up for me and put a knot in it? I want a nice nice badger knot where should I go to get one?
Super easy to put a new knot in yourself. I did both of mine. One with a plisson knot that decided to seperate from the handle and then with a Tgn finest. There are endless threads on how to do it yourself, so I won't bore you there. Try the original knot as suggested. I didn't like it as much as I like my two replacement knots though.
Welcome to the club. As for the original knot... If you like boar then ok. I don't like boar so much. Badger or synthetic for me. But do try it before tearing it out.
So I've perused a few pages of this thread and would appreciate input on my situation. I really knew nothing of these brushes, but recently found one as part of an "old Victorian shaving set" at a local antique shop. He's asking $165 for this rare set . This "set" consists of this brush, a mirror on a stand and a 70's coffee mug!. The brush is badly tarnished but otherwise solid with no scratches or dents and the original boar knot. It looks identical to the ones in this thread. It is unmarked (I thoroughly inspected it) other than the "Rubberset trademark, sterilized, made in the USA on the bottom. There is no "3" or "4" stamped on the brush. So, my question for you guys is what's a fair price to offer? I'm not looking to get it for a steal, but don't wish to be raped either. When I saw it the owner of that section wasn't in, but will be this coming weekend. I'd like to pick it up. I really want to stress it's nothing like shiny at all...it almost looks like it's pewter. I'm hoping it'll polish up, but I doubt it. Thanks in advance...
That seems high when you can buy them on eBay for around $80-90 easily. It will probably clean up nicely with a little work. I'd try and buy the brush by itself. Make him an offer. Mine has no number in it and I like it a lot.
Not sure what the rest of the setup looks like, but I rolls offer him$100 shipped till you and see what he comes back with
I'm thinking I'll just ask him what he wants for the brush only. ..who knows. If he says $15 I'll go $30 for fun.
I have noticed that the mirrors tend to go for a lot of money because they often didn't survive in good condition so I would say that is where the bulk of the cost is. You may actually convince him to sell the brush at that $15 to $30 price since it isn't the object that has the higher perceived value. Good luck to you sir!
