A few months back I restored a vintage Fuller brush with a TGN badger knot. As mentioned in me thread, I was undecided if I should go badger or boar. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/vintage-fuller-restoration.47963/ Well I still had the temptation and luckily landed this Fuller handle. Its identical to my other handle. This time..... as you guessed.. I am going with boar...maybe.. this Maggards synthetic knot looks great too. I also purchased a Made Rite handle that I had originally thought of installing the synthetic knot in. Now for the pics
Here is the Maggards synthetic knot 22mm and a new/unused Omega boar brush. I did a little test fitting and this is where my "which knot to use" dilemma came up. I drilled out the knots and sanded them with wool cloth. The Made Rite I just polished. It was in very nice shape (no need for the steel wool).
Now for the boar knot removal. I used a hand saw to saw the end off. About 15 seconds- no power tools needed here I then used a 15mm socket and a hammer. I punched out the knot. Credit here goes to Oscar11. I saw this method used in a post. I held the brush in my hand and gave it some strikes with the hammer. I then cut off the plastic ring around the knot. I used my finger to bend the knot in order not to cut any of the bristles. Once I had a slit cut in, I used a screwdriver to remove the ring.
I then filled the handle with epoxy to add weight. The only reason I am posting is the I am waiting for them to cure. Once finished I will post the finished products.
Here are the finished brushes. Set with silicone of course. The Fuller is 23mm with 53 mm loft. Knot came from Omega 10290 Made Rite is 22mm with 50mm loft- Maggard's synthetic knot
Thanks gents. In full disclosure, I did ruin the Made Rite. While drilling out the knot I went too far. It has a small hole in the side. I almost tossed it. I have not tried the Maggard's synthetic so I decided to finish it. The knot was only $6. For that price its worth finding out if I like the knots for future restoration. I'll just add that expense to the research account.
You certainly have that polishing method down to a sweet science. Very nicely done Gabe. I picked up that little polishing kit you mentioned earlier. Are you using the white compound?
Of course. You're not using it? The maroon one gets the wool cloth marks out. And after that, the handle looks really good. But the white one really gets the shine out.

I am...but I need to use it a few more rounds to get that high gloss finish. Mine are clean and shiny..but your stuff looks like the showroom floor at a dealership...lol.
