1. While seeking out some information on knots, I found this page.

    http://www.made-in-china.com/compan...rd=shaving+brushes&comProvince=nolimit&code=0

This page is to a trade website for company information for Chinese firms.

I began looking around and here is the data that found for some companies we are familiar with. I posted seven company listings because there were a lot of smaller companies that were listed but did not have sufficient images of products.

There are for many of these several layer pages providing detailed information that is provided by each company to provide trade information.

I decided to post this to provide members a chance to get more information on the companies we discuss on a daily basis.

Note this is taken from the webpages including spelling errors intact.

  2. Thanks to all who have read this.

One of the reasons why I posted this information in a neutral fashion and stated that the information "is provided by each company." We hear a lot about some interesting "product claims" and wonder where some of these statements come from. Here are some of the statements in their own words, some truthful and others maybe not so much.

In addition some people feel that certain suppliers are "Mom and Pop" operations, when in reality they are a fair sized company with as many employees as some of the larger well known manufacturers. So the employee information also helps us to have a better gauge of the level of operations.

I wanted to put this out without giving any slant to the information to let the members determine these issues for themselves.

This would seem to indicate that Frank Shaving is (or wants to be) a provider of shaving products to a fair number of very prestigious firms...and Vie-long. I wonder if Frank was at one point just a supplier of hair to these companies?

  4. Or are they "beefing up their resume" a bit?
  5. This entire "Brush thing" still has me confused more and more each time I read something different about it. I have a rotation of badger, boar and horse. None of the brushes I use has cost more than 50$. I dare say that most are under 20$. While not as stylish as some shown here on the site, they all work well. My feelings about 300$ badger brushes is fine if you feel that you need them but I don't yet understand how they can be 15x as good as my 20$ badger that was probably made in the same plant by the same guy.

  6. I can almost guarantee that they were not made by the same guy. The difference is subtle but noticeable. Think of it like comparing a Cadillac to a Bentley. They are both nice cars and will both get you from point A to point B in comfort. But the Bentley is a much nicer way of doing it. The $50 brush might be hand finished, whereas the $300 brush is entirely hand made using rare and exotic materials.

  7. An apt analogy is cars. A Lexus is more expensive than a Toyota and an Acura is more expensive that a Honda. Why? Because they have some nicer amenities and the status effect. It gives people an ego boost to have something better than their peers. It applies to a lot of products, the best marketing strategy is to produce a "luxury" product people are willing to pay a premium for. The quality versus cost curve is exponential, a small increase in quality commands an increasingly larger increase in cost. It just depends on your resources, Bill Gates probably wouldn't think twice about spending $400 for a shaving brush, whereas a college student would think $10 was excessive.
  8. I started with an Omega board and then a Lijun finest. I finally gave into curiosity and bought a Simpson Duke 3 best badger. I am happy with the Lijun but I don't like the bulb shape. The Duke cost 5 times more and I have to admit that the Lijun is better, it has never shed a hair and is allot more dense. The only area the Duke exceeds the Lijun is the name and logo do not wear off, while the Lijun name disappeared in a month.

But I could not help myself I ordered another big name brush, a Rudy Vey custom, boxelder handle with a Shavemac D01 fan..... well this brush is awesome, and it looks fantastic.
  9. I would prefer to not have one more thing made in China...
  10. Agreeing completely with johnus,PlanofMan and Erik Redd. Any product is worth only what it can be sold for. While I agree some items are made better or with better materials. Are they really 15-20X's better?? The same item can be bought by different people for different reasons. For instance most brushes no matter what material they are made of(bagger, boar, horse or synthetic) "work" reasonably well, I got my #6 horse from bestshave for two reasons:
    1) It's CHEAP!!! :)
    2) I like the idea that "supposedly" the horses aren't killed just to make a shave brush and its a natural product.
I KEEP the brush because it works VERY well for me and it's CHEAP!!!!

Does anyone here think "The Donald" would use a $2 shave brush no matter how well it works?? Of course not "He NEEDS it to be EXPENSIVE!!!" to show how affluent he is, to his rich friends and the outside world in general!! Consequently items are made to fit buggets as well as actual needs and price is almost unimportant except in how it relates to the ability of the individual to afford it.....:happy097:
Bottom line use what works for you and what you can afford, thats all that really matters....

Now my head hurts :( I'm so glad to have found a brush that works for me and is "CHEAP" :)

  11. The rich didn't get that way by wasting money. If he uses a shaving brush, I can almost guarantee that it is simple, well made, and as cheap as he could get without compromising on quality.
  12. I'd have to disagree on this one. The Donald was bankrupt a few years ago with massive debt, yet his creditors let him live on a much bigger allowance than I'll ever make in the hopes of getting repaid. My guess is he's got absolutely nothing that is cheap. There is a difference between the rich and ultrarich.

There was a story about the CEO of Citigroup a few years ago. He went to lunch and couldn't find a suitable wine by the glass for his palate, so he ordered a $350 bottle of wine and had one glass. With an income of tens of millions of dollars a year, he can easily waste several hundred thousand a year with no real effect on his net value.

  13. And at the end of the day, isn't that what really counts? Within the limits of my budget, all I care about is that a brush works well. The manufacturer, hair in the knot, and price are irrelevant. The price tag for some brushes is justified. Others seem to be expensive just because they are.

The $300 brush should be much better than the $20 brush. There is no guarantee that is the case, however, and increasing price typically brings diminishing returns past a certain point. That is also true for items other than shaving brushes.
