I'm trying to remove the lacquer from some NEW razors. I boiled in water and baking soda. Then water and vinegar. Then burned with a brulee torch. Then some flitz. Now the caps and base plates are soaking over night in acetone. This stuff is really hard to remove.
    Anyone have Any tips?
    Thanks!

91% alcohol should do it. Did for me once anyway.

How about lacquer thinner ..... sold at Home Depot ...... strong stuff.

I clean mine cathodicly using the following:

50 g/L Sodium Carbonate (soda ash)
    25 g/L Trisodium Phosphate (TSP)
    25 g/L Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)

Heat to 60C and use a stainless steel spoon as annode and run about 6VDC through it. Works every time.

Even without running current through this solution it will still strip the laquer in no time.

50-50 mix of lacquer thinner and alcohol will also work.

Thank you. Looks like I need to pick up some lacquer thinner today at Lowe's.
Then mix it 50 50 with rubbing alcohol or use it straight up? Does it soak in it and it dissolve or do I need to scrub it off?
How long should it take? Sorry...never used it before.

Lacquer thinner should be used straight and in a well ventilated area. Let the razor soak for maybe 10 to 15 minutes in the thinner and then go over it with a toothbrush. Be sure to wear gloves to keep the lacquer thinner off your hands.

BTW the stuff is very flammable ..... so keep away from ignition source. :angry021:

Btw, are you looking to get the razor down to bare metal, or just get to the gold wash? If you’re looking to get to bare metal, you’re good with the lacquer thinner. If you’re looking to preserve the gold wash, eh.......

I want to get them to bare metal. I just put 3 baseplates and three caps in about 5 minutes ago. I'll post how it goes later tonight or tomorrow.
    Thanks for all the help

BTW, my solution isn't flammable. It will eat the flesh off your bones but it won't burn your house down. Well, unless you run a current through it. Then it gives off Hydrogen gas but we all know Hydrogen isn't flammable, it's explosive and that's completely different.

Well I think it worked. I washed them in dawn and water then dried.
The brass black stuck better rather than beading up. I'll polish them tomorrow to get a relieved look and then wax. I did my NEW Deluxe and a Goodwill awile ago and they came out great.

New Deluxe with charcoal goods handle I antiqued. Brian from Charcoal Goods was really helpful with tips on antiquing as he used to offer that as an upcharge. Now I know why he doesn't do it anymore as it is a very time consuming process. So all of my handles started as shiny brass or copper.

Here is a SC and two LC razors.
I will polish off some of the brass black tomorrow. I may use a copper charcoal goods and a brass handle instead of these. They are already finished. The copper one especially will look nice with the high copper content caps. It's a copper version of the one on the NEW DELUXE .

That Goodwill is bizarre. The top cap is a modified SC specific cap (the one with corner prongs to fit an SC plate with the cutouts for the prongs.) The base plate is LC. Even though bott are modifed, it's finicky to get the cap centered with a blade and even allignment. It still feels off

If anyone has a spare with the prongs let me know.
