Today I got a wild hair to go check out some antique shops to kill some time. It was my first time ever in my 38 years to ever set foot into an antique shop. Of the 4 shops I went into there was only 2 razors and 2 junk nylon brushes. The first razor I came across was a str8 and it wasn't very str8 either. It had 3 nasty chunks taken out of the blade :( I did however run across an old Gillette travel razor in an imitation leather case. It is a small 3 piece with a handle that is just under 2 inches long. The engravings on the back look something like this:

    REG. U.S. PAT. OFF
M ..................... 2 (the dots aren't on the razor. It is the only way I could make the 2 stay where it is supposed to be)

    GILLETTE MARCAS REGS

I will try to get some pics of it up later but does anybody have any idea how old this thing is? I don't expect it to be anything worth much. I only paid $3.00 for it but thought it was cool so I bought it.

JayKay 3000 posts and all I got was this lousy title

There seem to be a lot of those small gillette travel razors floating around, especially at the antique shops. I dont know the age of them but I almost bought one my self the first time I ran accross one.

  5. Stick with it Chaney,
I do a fair bit of traveling and always try to stop in unknown (to me) antique stores. I've found some wonderful DE razors for very little money. Of course, I've seen lots of awful razors as well, so be ready for some heartbreak.........hehehe.
The thing is (just between you and me), those shops haven't really caught on to what those DE razors mean to some people. As a result, the prices are gonna be a lot lower than what you'd see on ebay. Yeah, it's a hit or miss thing, but the hunt is part of the game. Nothing like finding an Aristocrat that's never been used for $10............delicious!
Straights can command much higher prices at those kind of stores, even razors beat to hell will be $15-20, while DE's can run less, and be in much better shape. Plus, watch for 'vintage' brushes, mugs, even soaps. I have an unused bowl of Yardley lavender shaving soap from the 30's or 40's (haven't tried it yet), that I found while wandering around one store. Never know what you'll run into.
I hope to soon see some pics of your new 'treasures'.........

Oh........the other thing to get past is the way almost all those stores smell. Reminds me of Eau de Grampa's Basement.........an older scent.....heh.

You are right about the smell. The first shop I walked into reminded me of my wifes grandmothers house.

So........I should or shouldn't add this to my list of available scents? ;)

Congrats on the first find, Chaney! Hope you enjoy the razor!

Would that be "musty" instead of "musky"? :D

  9. Hi Boss,
I was hoping to already see it in a 'New @ TSD Store' announcement post. Of course you should include this in your line up.........silly girl. What about coming up with a few other scents to choose from, ones in a similar vein. Something for the 'more mature' members.
I'm thinking as a compliment for the ladies: A perfume strength fragrance called 'Grandma's Drawers'. Yep, that whiff you catch while looking through.........oh wait...... I just realized that name could have a few different meanings. Well Joanna, take your choice of which scent to use and I'm sure it will be just as good as the one for Gramps.
Would you be using EO's for these creations, and if so, what notes were you thinking of adding to those?
I hope I didn't spoil any surprises you had planned for us.
