Captain Obvious here, with a friendly reminder/tip/advice: When lathering on the face, whether with a soap or a cream, be sure to add plenty of hot water. What I typically do is shake the brush once, then hit the soap or cream and go directly to face with the slurry. Then after working into the face for a little while, I dip my brush in the hot water in which it was pre-soaking.....and go back to face. Repeat as many times as necessary to fluff up the lattice of the lather and get that nice cushion-y effect
The way I do it when I lather on my face (not just direct on my face but at all times bowl or not) I keep on running hot water on the very bottom of the hairs near the base and it will keep the whole brush hot and wet without loosing cream in the process.
That is pretty much how I do it, except that I shake the brush out really well before loading it up with the cream or soap that I'm using. I then dip just the very tip of the brush into hot water as I build up the lather, dipping as needed to add water. That procedure is exactly how those old style scuttles that have the soap in the top with drain holes underneath are meant to be used. The brushes of the times were skinny enough to fit down into the scuttle when you needed more water while building the lather on your face.

Yep. These days with running water, we don't have to concern ourselves with transporting hot water to the shaving stand.
just a quick note... I've had better luck with a hot, DAMP brush to start the lather. After the 1st pass or so, when the lather starts to dry a little I take my fingers, dunk em in some hot water and then Drip the water into the breech where the bristles meet the handle. This takes some of the lathery goodness hiding in the breech down to the tips without watering down the lather.
I don't know if it had been mentioned before. When I build lather directly on my face I always wet my face with hot water before proceeding with the brush. After some swirls I have to wet the bristles a little because the lather is too thick.
lil update, Cap'n Obvious... from Mr MOTO (Master of the Obvious) Ive noticed better results when face lathering by ensuring the brush is FULLY loaded with soap. I mean really working it in the brush. Not just the tips but getting the soap into the inner breech. I think I saw this in a Mantic vid or a method shaving tutorial...so props to both !
