is menthol addictive?

My dear friends, for many years, I shaved with Noxzema lather cream exclusively before it was discontinued in North America in the early 1990's. Noxzema lather is, and always has been a cream with a strong menthol presence, which always made shaving a pleasure. After it became unavailable, I switched to Gillette lather cream in the white and blue tube, but hated it, because of the lack of menthol and skincare, and then found a tube of Menthol Gillette lather cream in a store in Paris, which I enjoyed very much. I find now, with my HUGE stash, about 50% of my creams and soaps are mentholated, and I somehow feel peculiar if I don't take a mentholated shave every day, so that's why I wonder if menthol can become addictive.

i don't know but i just love the smell and cool of menthol. this product that i'm using, Pain Free Easy Shave cream, is medicated and has really pleasant menthol and i love it. i guess because i associate menthol with freshness. so menthol is "addictive" for me in that sense.

    Only mentally.

I'll pick a mentholated cream over a non mentholated any day. Not to mention the aftershave.

Have you tried Tryphon's Permafrost from Razor and Brush. Gio makes it, and it's the most menthol I have ever had. He even makes Menth-O-Laterwhich is you can add to any cream/soap. I haven't had a chance to get it yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar it will be on my next order.

ohhhhhhhh, I love Permafrost soap. In fact, I have the Permafrost Blue stick, which I find possibly even a bit more cooling than the regular version of Permafrost. I may buy the Mentholator, just to see how far I can go in terms of cooling.

    Blue stick, huh?

I didn't even know there was such a thing.

yeah, and is it ever nice--the lather is as rich, and creamy as the regular, and the cooling starts as soon as you start rubbing the stick on your beard. By the time you're halfway finished lathering up, your face will feel frozen! I also love the scent.

its not addictive it just feels really good on your face. Just like menthol cigarettes, they feel really smooth and cool on your throat and mouth but its not the menthol thats addictive its the nicotine:D id take menthol shaving creams and menthol cigarettes over regular creams and cigarettes.

Addictive? For me not really. Okay, I'm a menthol-head, but i still enjoy "normal" creams too :D

The Blue is Permafrost with a touch of anise. Nice!

I like Permafrost with a touch of a good Limes cream. Gio make one of those too :)

this is strange, but I'm a heavy smoker :( :( :( but I hate menthol cigarettes. I used a non-mentholated cream this morning, (Park Avenue Royal Musk) and although I enjoyed it, I still did not get the same feeling of pleasure that I get from let's say a cream like Ingram, or a soap like for example, Avalanche.

I think it is. :think002 I've been using the same aftershave (Max Refreshing AS) for about three months now. Every time I try to use something different, it just doesn't feel right so I end up finishing with the menthol AS every time. My fingers are getting tired of typing that name, but I can't stop using it!

After reading this thread, I don't think I'll ever start using a menthol shave cream.

James, I finished off with Anherb a/s conditioner, which is very mentholated, so it shows I have to have my menthol fix! :happy102

Haha i switch off from menthol cigarettes to non-menthol. Camel makes the best mentholated cuz they know how to blend the menthol and tobacco together without drowning out the tobacco flavor but not putting to little ammount of menthol in the cigarette. But i do enjoy proraso shaving creams cuz they wake me up in the morning with their cool and tingly feeling.:D

I've been meaning to try some of that menthol lotion. Let me tell you something, I'll go for anything that detracts from the South Louisiana heat.

oufffffff, Louisiana is sooooooooo hot and humid in summer, like South Florida. Even Montreal can give you guys competition by times, so yes, Alcolado Glacial does the trick nicely!
