Tonight I just went for a DFS shave and got a little better than that with only a 2 pass shave. I got BBS on my cheeks and a little better than DFS on my neck. I didn't realize how much concentration it would take at first starting SR shaving but I learned fast. I got a good shave WTG on my cheeks but man did I have to concentrate, on the right side was no problem. On the left despite shaving with my safety razors and the Schick left handed I really struggled to hold the SR at the correct angle and make small strokes with the razor. But I did it without a single weeper or nick, the shave gods were looking out for me tonight. I finished my WTG pass on my neck with the Schick and XTG on the second pass. After going WTG on my cheeks with the SR I figured I wouldn't push my luck tonight. so opted for a DFS tonight but got better than I thought I did. Went on to my post shave routine and felt my face and realized just how close I got on my cheeks, and that gentlemen put I smile on my face.
Maybe by my Birthday I can get one complete WTG pass and finish with the Schick or a safety razor and get back to my BBS shaves. All in all I put this shave down as a huge win in my books for a first time using a SR!

Per @Keithmax, this is a version of the advice he gave me:

1) Take your time and be patient
2) Take your time and be patient
3) If you aren't confident, put it down and use a DE
4) If you're in a hurry, put it down and use a DE
5) If it doesn't feel right, put it down and use a DE
6) Take your time and be patient

My advice (from everything I've read on TSD) is to use a two spine width angle, and just try to gently wipe the lather away with the blade. It took me about 30 shaves to get comfortable, almost 60 to get competent, and about 90 total to master the technique. Have fun with it, it's a marathon and not a sprint! And good luck to you!

Not just Scots, Us with Welsh roots have altered history to invent the kilts my ancestors never wore.

My paternal grandmother was Welsh! My roots are all British Isles (including a little Norman French).

I did the DNA thing and I'm 75% Irish, Scottish and English. The rest is divided up between the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Russia and the Iberian Peninsula.

Even after a year of straight shaving I still follow those rules. When I don't I pay in blood. You are off to a great start for SR shaving. I found that some angles were impossible unless I used my left hand (I'm a righty). In order to build the muscle memory and find a way to hold the razor to get the correct angle I practiced with a CJB shavette without the blade.

So are you shaving to get rid of your beard or for show now? That Aust is SHINY!

Not a bad way to start. I did kind of the same thing with pain sticks. Shaved the easy parts first to get comfortable than added as I went.

That's the way I did it. Go slow.

But, most importantly, take your time and be patient and never use it if it feels "funny" in any way. There, I think that finishes it up. Great set of rules and one to live by! I generally have ended up with the worst cuts when I break any of those 6 you listed.

Aww he's wearing a Wee Kilt, not as hard as putting on my Great Kilt! A Great Kilt is just one long 8 yard piece of Plaid you have to pleat each time you put it on. Ooops, did I just give something away, yes I own and wear a kilt from time to time.

@Keithmax turned me on to this 5/8 full-hollow round point, and it was the one I used to really learn the X's and O's of how to shave. It features the classic inspired black acrylic scales, and is well balanced and really holds a good edge.

SR newbies should Google Ralf Aust. Aust is truly a gem in the expensive world of steel. They are the only current Solingen blade maker that I would even consider purchasing, based on bang for buck. If I were stuck using this blade forever, I'd actually count my blessings.

What wear wee kilts...
