  8. Back up again the Dorko. I went back to my normal angle and really went for it this shave. Once again zero irritation but this time I was closer but no cigar on the BBS. The edge feels good, it is definitely sharp but I just can't get as close a shave as with my other straights.

  10. Thanks for the report. If you're feeling up to the chore, I'd propose a few more days in a row with this razor, and give us your thoughts on each of the days as you characterize it and dial it in. Might be helpful for new folks as an academic excercise to learn how one gets acquainted with a new razor, and for you to decide if it's a keeper or gets a new home.

Or you should also feel free to tell me to sod off with my dumb ideas :p.

What is it about this old hunk of steel?
    Did they forge metal differently?
    Hammer on it more?
    More carbon in the mix?
    Is it just heavier?
Did I just get lucky honing?
I thought about all this while getting a great shave with this old blade. Still dont have many answers, but I am quite happy this old shaver lives with me, wonder who it will shavin' in another hundred years.
  13. With the J-West straights we know it was continual prayer from the gaggle of Shinto priests around the tatara that resulted in the almost supernatural qualities of the steel. Sheffield steel is still a mystery, though scholars suspect it had something to do with the exclusive diet of boiled potatoes and gin consumed by the workers.

  15. In what country was this razor made? I'm not familiar with this name.

  16. I think it's from England:
    THOMAS TURNER & CO
    Suffolk Works, Sheffield
ca. 1834-1921 Turner Thomas & Co. merchants, & table & spring knife, razor, saw, file, edgetool, steel, &c. manufacturers, Suffolk Works, 1 Suffolk road From Whites Directory of Sheffield 1852
  17. Yes, I had a fine 'FBU' example from T. Turner & Co. a while back on a restoration. Loved the blade shape and the Sheffield steel took a fantastic edge. Nice razor!

  18. A good idea. I think the next step is to hone the razor. Then I know I can compare it directly to my other razors. Even though the edge looks and feels good I need to figure out why this razor is not delivering the shaves I expect.

Today's razor was a Hart 6/8, excellent shave.

    Pre: shower, Nivea face wash
    SR: Antoni Tadross
    Brush: TGN synthetic
    Soap: WSP Formula T Barbershop
Post: cold water rinse, alum, Aqua Velva Ice Blue

Well tonight ended up being an interesting but incomplete shave. Someone around here started shooting off fireworks half way through my shave tonight. I stopped after the second pass, and thought about grabbing a DE or SE but I was close enough. First pass was really good reduction WTG as I had not shaven for about 2 days. Second pass was XTG on my cheeks and WTG on my neck again. which produced somewhere between DFS and alittle better than DFS. I ran the alum over my neck and cheeks and it was silent. I decided on splashing on the Aqua Velva and calling it a night! Maybe tomorrow will be better shave, hope everyone had a Great shave today!

Bengal versus 5 days growth (we just moved), SV set the stage and the glide was superb.
