Shave Den Sunday and time for a brief break from my 30-Day Focus on the PAL InjectoMatic and Personna Floating Head.

I had been asked recently if I had tried the present-day Japanese Schick injector blades. I realized I had purchased some about a month ago and hadn't tried them yet, so I thought I'd try one today for the first time.



2-day growth, 2-pass shave.

Oh my, this could be a game changer.
I paired the blade with a mild razor - Schick Type L. I will eventually have to test with other injectors - but first impressions are very positive.

On the first pass I did one side of my face WTG, the other XTG. Reduction was very good with both, slight edge to the XTG. Each stroke was very smooth, with the first few strokes being so quiet and smooth that I had to check the magnifying mirror to see if I was actually cutting anything - yes, that smooth and quiet.

Last pass ATG had more of the usual audio feedback. It was still very smooth. I knew that this was going to turn into a great shave. Even my usual tough spots that are difficult to do ATG were near flawless.

A fantastic shave with no cuts, nicks, weepers OR need for touch-ups. I cannot believe that I waited so long to try these blades. They leap well ahead of the other present-day injector blades that I use - Schick China. And I don’t care for present day Personna’s but only tried them when I first started out with injectors. I should revisit them as well.

I’ll take a while to try the Japanese in various razors before I consider a final in-depth assessment, but this first shave was an impressive start.

Even if they do hold to form in subsequent shaves, I will not necessarily discard my Chinese and shift to Japanese because the Japanese are pricey compared to other present day injector blades. A quick cruise of Amazon / Ebay (per blade price):

Who knew there was a secret brotherhood of boxed Personna Floating Head users out there? You got quite the deal @zec668. I have not tried the 74s (and the magazine is full) as I load mine with a twin blade. It is a great combination. One of those "can't miss" shaves. Enjoy your Floating Head - it is a fantastic razor.

I don't know if it is love or lust but I bet she'd be great at selling Bunnies.

I'm glad you like the soap. Though I do like menthol, it is just too much for me

And now for something completely different . . .

Gem Featherweight
Gem stainless steel ptfe blade (1)

I don't know why I have this fascination with the Gem Featherweight, but I have about a half dozen of them in a number of variations. This particular specimen is somewhat unusual in that the handle is olive drab green instead of the usual ivory, and the head has a silver matte finish instead of the usual chrome or gold plating. It has the same head as the G-Bar.

The Featherweight doesn't get a lot of respect but I find it to be a smooth little shaver, on the mild side but still quite efficient. With its light weight and ribbed plastic handle it feels vaguely like an injector - not a bad thing at all.

I did my usual 3 pass shave with no special attention to anything and ended up with a shave that was BBS except for a couple of my usual trouble spots. Overall, the quality of the shave rivaled those I've been getting lately from the Cobra, SE1, Supply Provision Single Edge, etc. This from a razor that I seem to recall purchasing for $5 - and that's one of my more expensive Featherweights. I have another that went for $1.04.

The harshness often encountered with the first couple of shaves with a Gem stainless steel ptfe was simply not there. I like the Featherweight a lot.

First shave with the GEM 1912 and it was wonderful. I hadn't shaved since Wednesday and had a lot of growth. I haven't used my Twisted Tweed in a while so I grabbed it and lathered up a beautiful bowl. My first pass was WTG, very loud with significant reduction. Considering the about of hair it had to get through there was virtually zero hesitation. Second pass I went XTG, slightly less audible but very smooth. Final pass I went ATG and ended up dolphin smooth. I caught 1 tiny weeper on my neck which the alum closed up, the alum was barely noticeable on the rest of my face. Finished up with some Thayers and a liberal dose of Osage Rub. Short of the weeper this shave was perfection. I'm going to spend some time with this razor, the fact that something so beautiful works so well just amazes me. Have a great day folks!

I had My 3rd Shave with the Cobra Classic Tonight that Martin Kindly Sent on this TSR Pass Around..I Went for the Money Button BBS Dolphin Smooth Shave..I am sitting here again with an All Over Dolphin Smooth BBS Result..I don't mean form North to South & form East to West neither..I mean in every Darn Direction..

This is My Last Shave with the Cobra before I Pass it On So here are Some Final Thoughts..The Cobra is by No Means a Blood Letting Monster..After having a few Shaves its More Like Middle of the Road in Terms of Aggressiveness..Around about a Schick Type G Injector with the Same Pro Blade..Its a Very Forgiving Shaver..Very Smooth..That said..Folks that Cant Handle or Not Used to a Crazy Sharp Pro Blade like this Might Confuse the Cobra as being an Aggressive Shaver because these Blades are Not for Everybody..They are a Lot of Blade for Sure..

A Lot of Folks that have Purchased the Cobra are Folks that will haven't Any Experience of Aggressive SEs or Injector Razors & Will be coming from a DE Background..There isn't a DE Out there that is as Aggressive as Some SEs or Some Injectors for that Matter..The Cobra is Well Balanced & Just so Beautifully Made..I Really Like this Razor a Lot..

I Haven't any Criticism of the Cobra except that its One Hell of a Price..Then Again So is a Head Nipping Wife that's Just Gonna Grow Old & Wrinkled..I wouldn't get No More than 4 Great Shaves out of a Feather Pro Blade the same as in any Razor..They Dull Very Fast & I Enjoy a Crazy Sharp Blade..

The Only Advice I can offer to Folks is this..If You Reckon a Crazy Sharp Blade is Not for You then the Cobra Might not be the Razor for You..I say this because using other Blades in this Razor is Just going to Take Away what the Cobra Actually is..You are as Well as Buying a Gillette Tech..I have used an Array of these Types of Blades & all they Will Do to the Cobra is turn it into Very Mild Razor..Of Course that's Fine & Dandy but I Just Don't see the Point of Buying a Porsche & then Detuning it..Thats Me Talkin Mind..

Tom, the MMBT is a great razor for me. It is also my birth era razor. It was introduced in 1947, my birth year. Mine doesn't have the Guiding Eye, but that is ok. It shaves very smoothly. You shave with the head almost flat on your face.

Now I want one of those Personna Floating Head razors.

I've been looking for ages and I can never find one.
