Karl, it definitely takes practice. I think I didn't really begin to figure it out until I was about 30 shaves in. Well, I'm a slow learner. It wasn't until just recently that I can really say I know how to use an SR and I'm 100 shaves into it. I guess I'm a really slow learner! Watch your angles and keep the spine about 2-3 spine widths off your face, use a wet lather and shave like you're just shaving the lather. Make smooth and steady strokes. Go with the grain only until you become more proficient with the razor. Think of an SR as the ultimate and infinity adjustable razor. Keep at it my friend and you will get the hang of it.
Carl Schmidt Blue Steel I bought this wonderful straight a few years ago from an antique store in Danville, Virginia for $30, along 3 other great razors. They were all shave ready.
