Got mine too. Thrilled beyond measure at the condition this thing is in. It sold for $180 in today's dollars. I can see why. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I don't know how you define cheap. I paid $24 which I consider a steal. I see ones in that range which may be comparable. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Just make sure the hone isn't cracked and there is a blade and a handle. Unfortunately there are lots out there in real bad shape. The one I bought the guy was asking $50, I offered $35 shipped and he jumped all over it. I'm hoping to work on it this weekend and try it out next week.
Anything tricky about the initial rehoning? Confirmed as good as mine looks it's not shave ready and needs to be sent out. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Cleaned up a layer of grunge that's all. Hone is 100%, strop has a small nick , probably not worth getting out the sandpaper. Gears are surprisingly smooth. No corrosion on the blade but the built in hone isn't up to getting it shave ready. It's really good at slicing fingers, whiskers not so much. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Bought another for $7, $13.80 shipped, a Viscount (aluminum case). Even if were just a handle I'd be satisfied. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
OK victory, working handle for $13. Good box with complete papers, clean strop, case, and blade are a bonus (Hone is broken). Will start honing the two blades soon as my 5 micron lapping film arrives. I actually did two passes with the first blade without damage this morning but it wasn't a good shave. There are a few businesses online that make custom-sized stones, and it looks to me like the Rolls hone is 1/8" thick, which is a standard thickness so we'd just need them cut to size. If we had enough of us interested, I suspect we could get hones made to measure for the Rolls case. I don't know what they would cost, but I would guess $10-$20 apiece for nice oilstones in the same grit as the original. If you'd be interested, could you PM me? Not saying I'm going to order; I just want to figure out if there's enough interest here to make some inquiries.
I spent some time tonight working on my Rolls. I had previously cleaned and conditioned the strop. Tonight I added some .5 micron diamond paste to it. I also cleaned up and repaired the hone(it had cracked so I super glued it back together and sanded the joint as described in previous posts).I clean out all the gunk from the chassis and cleaned the friction assembly as well. I gave the blade(previously honed outside the system) about 20 laps on the strop and wow is it ever sharp. Sent from my Galaxy S6 using Tapatalk
