Was great to use an injector today, BBS results and no irritation. May have to ride this one out for a while.

    Today's Shave: Friday October 28, 2016

Above The Tie SE2 open comb razor
Feather Artist Club Professional blade (1)
    The Grooming Co. synthetic brush
    Stirling Bay Rum soap
    Captain's Choice Lime aftershave

Around 1940 the Gem Micromatic Open Comb and the Valet Auto-Strop VC3 were discontinued, and (unless I am forgetting something) thus ended the era of open comb single edge razors.

Until now. Above The Tie has introduced an open comb version of their SE1 single edge razor, the SE2. It is the first open comb single edge razor in about 75 years. (Okay, there is Tom's Bunny, but it isn't a production razor.)

It has the same blade gap as the SE1, and as expected the shave is not radically different - perhaps just a touch more aggressive. The open comb feels a little different, but the shave is ultra smooth and close.

One nice thing is that ATT offers the open comb base plate for sale a la carte. Since the SE2 uses the same cap as the SE1 as well as standard handles, buying a new base plate allowed me to convert my SE1 to an SE2.

I need more shaves to form a clear opinion, but I don't think the SE1 base plate is going to get much more use. :happy088:

So I got my "new to me" new Mongoose B3 today. The former owner bead blasted the handle, cerakoted the baseplate and the underside of the cap, and polished the top side of the cap. Sorry the phone pics came out so crappy today, but this thing really is a sharp razor.

I am going to rank this up there with the R41/H2/Jacked up Futur in terms of efficiency, but what amazes me is how comfortable it is to use.

With that Dub handle it weighs in at 181 grams, which makes it all the more important to focus on zero pressure. I ended up with an unbelievably smooth shave, no nicks or weepers, only one little patch in a trouble spot on my neck that shows a little red now. I am not sure that this is the handle that will permanently reside on the head. Considering it is the first time out, I am pretty thrilled with the result. I expect that like the R41, this is not a razor I would want to use every day

The interesting thing I am finding is that I don't think I have found an SE razor yet that was uncomfortable to use. I assume the extra blade rigidity plays the biggest role in this. My DE's have been feeling very neglected lately.

Hard to beat the amazing Feather AC blades. Looks like quite a shaver Jared! I see your injectors photobombing in the background:D

I have always been impressed with the shaves I get from the L. Mild, smooth, yet close and comfortable. Love it:happy088:

I kind of went off the deep end a little this month when it came to buying injectors... I bought ten injectors and 3 SE's, so I have pretty much spent my self imposed shaving allowance for the next six to nine months. But I spent years buying and selling dozens upon dozens of DE's to find three or four serious keepers. In three weeks I have found twice as many keeper SE's and only spent a small fraction of the money. It has put a lot of fun back into the razor aspect of shaving. I never would have classed myself as a razor collector, but I guess I am becoming one by default.

I've been using the Schick D all week and it has been superb. This sweet little razor has the perfect amount of agressiveness imo.

Thank you, Buddy. I have always thought the Mongoose was kind of blocky and utilitarian looking, but the touches the last guy put on this make it pretty darn cool looking.

Which is why I qualified it with "unless I am forgetting something." At my age, it happens. :ashamed001:

I also knew that if indeed I was forgetting something, someone on this forum would call me on it.

How about, "The SE2 is the first widely available open comb SE in 75 years." :happy088:

Excellent shave this morning with the Schick N1 injector. Marvelous lather from the Stirling Cocoa Forest shave soap. Three refreshing passes for a dolphin smooth finish. Have a great day guys. :)
