1. I am using O-1 steel. It is an oil hardening steel. I have been doing some reading and that is an acceptable material. It will get nice and hard and be durable.

  4. Thanks for the info! I'm curious as to how she will hold her edge. I'll follow your progress. But knowing your aim for quality, I'm confident about the outcome. :)

  6. It is slow work with this grinder. I am roughing out the wedge shape now. I will need to add some fixture to my grinder to get it hollowed out slightly. [IMG][IMG]

  7. Very nice, when you say heat treated do you mean harden it or has it already been hardened and just needs tempering? Like the profile by the way.
  8. Right now the steel is soft. Once I get the shape and the majority of the material removed. I will heat treat and temper it. Then I will do the finish grinding and sanding. I plan on leaving the grind marks on the wedge. Then polish all unground surfaces. I like the industrial look showing tooling marks.

  11. I like the grind marks as well, maybe little finer grit, Looks about 80 grit to me. Between thickness of dime to nickel for hardening if memory serves, I'd air on the thicker side of a nickel and cold dip frequently during final grinding. Last comes tempering. Can't wait to see it progress. I've always wanted a forge and a homemade belt grinder with swappable sized wheels,,, someday.
  12. Yes it is 80. I have some 120 also. I may go even finer 220 maybe. I will see how it looks.

  13. Best of luck on the project! I have been hoarding bits and bob to try my hand at forging a blade for the last year. The profile looks really nice, keep us up to date!
