I just configured an entry-level Mac Pro and I get: – One 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon – 2GB (DDR2 800 MHz) – ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB – 320GB 7200-rpm SATA – 1TB 7200-rpm SATA For the same amount, I’ll get: – Intel Quad Core Q9650 (3Ghz FSB1333 Mhz) – Corsair Dominator 4 GB (DDR3 2000Mhz) – NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT – WD VelociRaptor 300 Go 10000 RPM – 1TB 7200-rpm SATA + an ASUS P5N64 WS PRO (nForce 790i Ultra SLI), a Noctua NHC12P cooler, a Seasonic power supply unit and a nice case. I would even save a few more bucks if I chose an Asus board with the latest Intel X48 chipset. Err, I guess I won’t be cool for another pair of years.
Actually, Vista runs really well on the core 2 duo macbook pro's, better then on the windows machines from what i have heard.
Maybe that's because there are fewer Macs out there to complain about. Through Quarter 1 of this year, Mac only had a 3.3% share of the market -- the rest belonged to PCs. The big problem in the "PC vs Mac War" is that there are too many variables to contend with in the PCs. All Macs will be euqal, PCs will not be. I personally grew to hate HP computers, and feel that their quality is not on par with Dell or Gateway, yet they sell the most units (Gateway is not even on that list). My previous PC was a Gateway that functioned perfectly for 6 years running XP -- long past when most people would have wanted to upgrade, I think. When the Hard Drive finally crashed, it seemed more prudent to buy a whole new sytem, and I bought another Gateway. Despite what I said earlier in this thread, the only problems I had was that Vista was a little buggy initially (patches and updates have alleviated the issues), and my printer was not compatible. But I blame the printer issue on HP, not Microsoft, because they weren't making drivers to support it. Epson, on the other hand, did provide drivers for my scanner. Not a real big deal, since printers are so cheap now.
I've had problems with Ubuntu, but never any I couldn't solve. I haven't lost any data yet either since installing it two versions ago last year Vista scares me
I think the article did, at least, imply it was based on market share too... The net percentage for Macs is not zero, but still lower than the percentage for PC:s (I can't be bothered to read it again, really) Another reason for me to use a Mac, since that makes it a lesser target for viruses and malware! Maybe there is something to be learned from this? Tested and QA:d hardware out of the box contributes to a system less prone to errors and flaws? Printer drivers is a very good point of comparison; At about the time I bought my first Mac, my wife got a new Dell LapTop at work. She wanted to install the drivers for our laser printer at home on her new PC, It took her 3 times to get it right. Wading through a guide, having to make decisions about ports and stuff she didn't have a clue about. When I installed the drivers for the same printer on my Mac, it was a simple issue of double clicking the CD icon and then double clicking on the "Install" icon and then it worked! We both used the driver discs that came with the printer! Things working IS cool! You just have to experience it to believe it. I used to be an avid follower of the PC. I've been working with them since late 80's, as a sysadmin and as a systems developer... I just got fed up and I can't see that I want to go back to haing a PC personally. I have to use them in my profession, and that is enough for me, at home I want things to be a little complicated as possible... As always YMMV!
Same here, Ubuntu all the way. I wouldn't mind to switch to Apple (since it's Unix-derived) but I would never ever go back to using Windows on my personal machine at home.
That is a good one.....and a good reason why I don't have Vista on my computer....XP was installed on mine, and will stay that way. My next one will definitely be a Mac.....
