We had notherns in some of the rivers in NM, but I never caught any. The lake my dad I went to had Walleye, which is what we always fished for. We never pickled them, though.
We do a lot of pike because they have a weird bone structure, and it is basically impossible to cut them out of the smaller ones without destroying a fillet. You can pickle the smaller ones with the little y bones right in them and they completely dissolve. You can't tell they were ever in there. I can put the recipe up if anyone wants it, it is a basic pickling recipe, the only thing is I brine them in salt water for a few days before they go in the pickling liquid. This step firms them up, and makes for an excellent firm texture. Even people who don't like pickled herring in general love this because of the texture, but it's all because of salting them down first.

well, it happened............ I was checking around on the Slim, trying to see if any part was nice and sharp, and I sure found out....nice cut on my finger. And that was on power #3. But perhaps it was due to the new blade being in there.
