In my experience horse is great if you get a good one, and the worst thing in existence for natural hair if you get a bad one. If a guy gets a moderately short lofted one, they have decent backbone, and won't tie themselves in knots. Taller lofted ones can be really floppy and the hairs can tangle really badly, even if you aren't very hard on them. I completely trashed one when I was a newbie, and PIFfed another that wanted to tangle up on me. I have had quite a few (6-8?) of them and really liked two or three. I sold one and really wish I hadn't because now I am trying to replace it.
The one I was using today is a 24mm fan with an effective loft of 46 to the glue bump. I bowl lather only with it, and comb it out after I am done using it. I do scrub with it a bit though, not just painting strokes. That is almost certainly overkill, (the brushing) but I like this one a lot, and I am kind of a nerd about my brushes. It has a decent scrub and this one isn't scritchy at all. It reminds me a lot of Simpson Best hair. For being fairly dense, I do have to say that it doesn't hog the lather. I think that "chubby" model we have been talking about would be a great brush, but I probably wouldn't recommend one to someone who was either a newbie, or only had one or two brushes. In my opinion they are finicky and high maintenance. I think they are cool as hell for a guy who likes having different brushes for the sake of the difference in brushes. I also like the white better than the brown. Every one that I really liked was white hair.
Of course, I have had horse lovers jump all over me for saying these things, so maybe I am way out in left field here.
The good thing about them is they are cheap to try. I will keep picking one up every now and then, I expect the next one will be the one we are talking about now. It sure is a good looking brush.
Sorry I turned this into a novel.
