I see some people lather in a cup and others do it on the face. Is either method better? For those of you using a cup/mug to lather in, how much time and effort is to clean out the cup after shaving? And what's the most efficient way doing it? I just don't want to add too much time to my morning prep. Thanks.
I used to lather with a cup but now I'm a face latherer. It just takes a quick rinse to clean the cup but you need to work the cream/soap a little bit to make lather. I prefer to just face lather now. It is quicker. And I think I personally make a better lather on my face. Theres also nothing to clean up in the end besides rinsing the brush.
I'm a cup latherer, but I imagine if you are looking to save a few minutes in prep time, then face lathering may be the way to go. Clean up from cup lathereing, however, is no more difficult than rinsing out your coffee cup in the morning.
face for soaps. for most creams, I'm actually lathering in my hand more these days. I guess that's a bit influenced by my experiences in Method stuff, but it works very well and I get a great lather in a matter of seconds. One less thing to clean up too.
Latte Mug for cream and soap. Keeps the brush and lather warm. Tried the face and the lather was cold.
Floppy, moppy brushes get lathered up in the bowl and then used to paint on the face. Denser, stiffer brushes get loaded up with product (soaps and creams) and then used to build lather directly on the face.
I like the quality and warmth of the lather I build in a hot mug best. I frequently use my hand or my face too, but I seem to make more of a mess when I build the lather completely on my face... there always seems to be some stray water hiding deep in the brush that suddenly surfaces and drips runny lather on my body or the sink/counter. I have better luck starting to build the lather in my hand and then move to the face to finish the build. Keep in mind that if you run out of lather and have to build some more for a 2nd or 3rd pass, your face will be too smooth to build much of a lather... but then again, you don't need much for those passes, either. As others said, rinsing the mug takes only seconds. FWIW, I usually squeeze any leftover lather from the brush back into the soap bowl... no sense throwing away good soap.
I have no problem making lather just as good as the first after doing one pass. It may be the creams or soaps your using. I've never ran out of lather after a 3 pass shave and touch ups. Theres still plenty to spare. I'm only using a best badger brush with a 20mm knot to boot.
Are you saying that if you completely deplete your supply of lather on the first pass, you can build a new batch of fresh lather completely on your face? My statement referred to chasro's premise that the lather be built completely on the face... so, after your initial lather is shaved off with the first pass, where is the lather you're using for pass two/three coming from? The only possibility is the residual in the brush, and while I usually have enough left in my brush, if not... and that's the situation I referred to in my initial response... I find it less than satisfying to try to build a new batch from scratch completely on my face. Without the agitation whiskers provide I just don't get nice lather. I don't think it's the soaps/creams I use.
I used to run into the problem of running out of lather that was loaded in the brush when I would use glycerine based soaps all on their own. I now use a lot more soap when lathering up my face with say.... a QED stick. My trick is super lather. I first use MWF which has a light scent and an amazing lather to load my brush and create a breech and than drop a tiny dab of whatever cream I want to use that day into the breech. The scent of the cream always breaks through and I havent had a bad lather yet using that method. I do like using soaps as well as creams and I just use a lot more soap when face lather. I have generally moved more towards tripple milled soaps though due to face lathering. I may give it a go with some other unscented tripple milled soaps when the puck of MWF runs out (if that ever happens). With that method, I have plenty of lather for a 3 pass shave and touch ups. I could probably squeeze a couple more passes out of it if need be.
I love the feel of lathering on the face. I usually soap up, dab of cream in the breach, lather on the face - occasionally tipping the tip of the brush in hot water. Whoa! Just love thinking about it!
I forgot to mention that part. I shake out more water than necessary to begin with so I dont make a huge mess with cream all over the bathroom. I usually dip the tips in the water half way through my initial lathering process and thats plenty of water to keep the lather going for the next 2 passes.
I get the lather going on my hand then move up to the face for a nice fluffy finish. I think this is the quickest.
