Gentlemen! Might I ask you all to please rise for a moment, doff your hats, bow your heads, and raise your razors in the air in salute to a gallant departed shave companion! For upon this, the 14th day of March, in the year of our Lord 2017, The Eternal Tub of TOBS Avocado Cream ( croap ) proved to be merely mortal after all. After 10 years of intermittent use and 5 solid months of daily use, it gave up the last ghostly bit of lather and departed for the Great Shave Den in the Sky, leaving only an empty shell of a plastic tub behind it. A moment of silence please...

The SP brush whipped up one last great lather from the Not-So-Eternal-After-All Tub of TOBS. I then used the EverReady 1912 for the first time since bending its backplate to steepen the shaving angle back to where it would have been originally. The difference in the shave was remarkable -- from a clunker to a nimble handy razor. After my usual diagonal passes, I did an ATG pass and then some buffing to get a near BBS.

The alum was quiet; I used the fancy CF essential oils balm partly because my skin is a bit dry from the weather and partly in honour of The Departed Tub.

I'm noticing that I'll still have plenty of TSD A.S. Splash w/Russian Leather after my shave soap of same type expires. It's done well with my canned foams/creams, like Rise and Barbasol. I wonder how it would be with a different kind of leather? (For next winter, I have my eyes on the Texas Leather from The Soap Exchange).

Hi...the last time I used it I got ALMOST as far as a full pass. I realize I haven't used it for a while now, and I think I'll get back to it with my next shave soap, which should be Thursday or Friday as my rotation goes.

It might be prudent to see if anyone who actually does the Ides shave survives before offering a make up date. Just a thought.

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful, and nearly eternal, soap. May its lather be forever present in the land at least in micro millionths of particles after being washed away. In that way, it never really dies.

Well, it's ready to go. My entry for the Ides of March shave is assembled and waiting for tomorrow evening. Here it is in all its awesomeness.



Simple construction. I used a 1/4" machine bolt which, amazingly enough, actually threads right into the center hole of the Feather. Pretty nice. A nut on top and bottom, hand tightened and it feels nice and secure. It's shiny, bright and clean, just like a razor should be. Of course with no blade guards/top caps the corners can flex and bend. There's nothing to keep it aligned or stop it from chattering. Basically, this is clearly the most ridiculous, dangerous and outrageous thing I've ever constricted to shave with. Yes, even more so than popsicle stick razors. At least with the sticks they provide some rigidity for the blade. And, the straight razor technique on the popsicle stick variety allows for better alignment and control. This thing could turn into a deep cut in a the blink of an eye. Set the angle too high, put some pressure on and watch the blood flow.

I debated using a different blade than the Feather, but I agree with the gentleman in the video who is to blame for this travesty that the sharp blade will reduce chances of drag, grab, and chatter. The smoother the better and I'd rather manage sharpness to gain less chance of anything interfering with the pass.

Now, for the lather choice. I'm pretty much planning on Arko. I know I can get mountains off of a face lather that will leave it uber-slick and moist to work with. I considered the Fat but if I don't get it quite right I'm just adding to the potential for a problem. Arko it is. The Semogue 620 is my choice for the brush as it will bring lots of water with it to keep it slick. I considered the Maggard Synth, but I want wet, slick, slimy stuff for this shave, not mountains of foamy lather.

Well, that's my plan. For those who are joining me in the quest for the Ides of March Shave I salute you. For those who are smart enough to stay miles away from this challenge - clearly you were raised right and have lived a good life. Enjoy the show! The brush is not living up to my standards. Losing a lot of hair, now I can live with a brush being a little floppy, or a little prickly, but I can't stand a brush that loses hair.
