  1. I would be in for a knot. I have never installed one and don't want to screw this up. I like synthetics, no preference on which. I will go with the group buy. Prefer the darker stain on the brush, but I'll be happy to own whichever @jtspartan 30DC brush.

  4. Hey @Bama Samurai , other than having a moderator bestow an honorary title on you, what is the secret to changing your title to something more sporty then "well known member"?

  5. April 22, 2017, Wherein our hero revisits a blade from his earliest days...

    Razor: F2 Gillette 195 Adjustable
Blade: Family Dollar DE (Dorco OEM) (1)
    Brush: Razorock Plissoft 22
    Cream: KMF fragrance-free
    Post: Alum, Listerine, WH

Before I got my first blade sampler and discovered the joys of Russian Steel, I started out by looking at some of the blades available locally. One of these was the made-in-Vietnam blades from Family Dollar. According to the Pace Shave website (paceshave.com), these are Dorco blades and are referred to as the STD301. Back then I had only a 60's SuperSpeed and questionable technique. As it was, I hated the FD blades and, after two shaves, put them aside, vowing never to use them again.

Recently, I've been reading posts where people have been praising the Dorco blades and decided it was time to try them again. We often talk about revisiting a razor or blade that didn't work for you but improved with improved technique. In this case... that didn't happen. The first pass seemed tuggy with less reduction than I'm used to. Things improved for the second pass, but the overall effect was just not as enjoyable as I've come to expect. The Alum definitely had some heat and I noticed a weeper that I didn't recall getting. (I think I nicked the head of a pimple/blemish.) A decent-enough shave, especially after the WH, but there are plenty of blades which will give me a better one with less hassle.

I wish I had Neal's vast knowledge in order to be able to express why I don't like these blades. I just say that I don't find them sharp or smooth. I suspect that part of the issue is the coating or lack thereof. (See @GlennConti's discussion of blade treatments in the Adjustable thread) Would I use them again? Maybe, but it would be in the absence of better options. (e.g., Societal Collapse, TDY to a base in the middle of nowhere) Ironically, I've used the Dorco Twin-Blade carts from Dollar General and found them to be decent.

  6. Just keep posting...we'll take care of the rest. That's what friends do for friends. Simple as that. :)

Honest answer: you have no choice whatsoever in your Custom Title. Stick foot in mouth...bam...you have a CT! :D
  7. Beautiful setup and photograph amigo. Hope you are well.

  8. This is right on the money. ^^^^

An Envy knot for instance, which is one of the denser knots you can buy by itself, set into a 26mm opening is going to feel almost like a 28.

Here are two brushes with the same 24 mm Envy knot, set to a mm's difference in free loft, but the Doug Korn has a smaller opening, and the Nathan Clark is right about at a 26.

Two completely different brushes; both just excellent. The one on the right definitely feels like a bigger brush though.

If a guy didn't want to drop that much ($60 ish) into a knot, I would look at a TGN 2 band finest. A similar knot, just a little less dense, and probably a little less soft. Still really good knots though. I have several, and wouldn't hesitate to buy more.

If you want Silvertip, I would again recommend looking at TGN. @Douglas Carey has one in grade A and has spoken highly of it. It was recommended to him by @Boojum. If either one of them recommends a knot, you can take that straight to the bank.
  9. Which is EXACTLY why they have put in place laws, where you have to jump through hoops to get a gun. :happy097: Plus, ultimately, we 'd have to storm the Bruxelles Palace, because, pretty much the control now comes from there. Joining the euro was a big mistake for Italy. Now it's like the Hotel California. Easy to get in, difficult to get out...

See what i mean? If it wasn't for me, would you be posting these awesome, funny pictures? Hell no! It would be the 356th post of "hello, i got a great shave today, just like the page before and just like all of you. See you tomorrow for another great shave, that we all know we will all have". Where's the passion? Where's the hatred for Derby? Where's the praise for your new blade? Ah, i must do everything on my own in this forum! I am a newbie that posts for 10! :eatdrink047:

  10. So, basically, you just use Soviet engineering tools and principles then.
  11. Fantastic photo Mark. My ATG brush is up the first of May. Hope you are feeling better.
  12. Very nice photos and the 2nd one, original. Usually i don't see the lofts from above.

Just an honest opinion and always a pleasure!
  13. Just say something incredibly funny, or incredibly stupid. I went with stupid.
  14. Knots for sale are generally measured as the diameter of the plug (base) and the total height.
  15. Boy and they call me Frugal.

I would just buy another knot
    :)
  16. Thanks. In this case I was just trying to demonstrate the difference a setting can make to the same knot.
  17. If they are available. For instance Omega sells brushes only. I have transplanted the Omega knots into other handles many times.
  18. Agreed, both on the stain and allowing Jason full artistic license on his creations
  19. Ok but I am sure you can get an equally good knot from so many different vendors that it is not necessary.

Now if the brush handle was cracked or broken I would completely agree to breathing new life into the knot
