May 10, 2017- Dorco, again!
Razor: NDC Post-War Tech
Blade: Dorco Prime Platinum STP-301 (1)
Brush: Razorock Plissoft 22
Cream: KMF fragrance-free
Post: Alum, Listerine, WH
Today's shave is a journey back into the confusing land of Dorco blades. As you may recall from previous posts, there are three basic versions:
- STD-301: The "dollar store" OEM blade
- ST-301: The familiar red/white packaged ones (ST-300 are supposed to be the same in different packaging)
- STP-301: The Dorco Prime Platinum blade (with double Teflon coating for smoothness and longevity)
My experiences, so far, with the first two have been mixed. Personally, I found the STD-301 from Family Dollar to be tuggy and uncomfortable (though I know
@wchnu considers them to be a "go to" blade). OTOH, I found the ST-301 to be a decent, comfortable blade. Courtesy of Andrew, I now have the chance to try the flagship STP-301. Since my most recent experience with a Dorco blade was last week's Tech mini-focus, I pulled out the post-War Tech for today's shave.
To be honest, I'm not sure what to say about this blade. It definitely was a smooth, comfortable shave with no signs of tugging. OTOH, I think the Tech might have been too mild a razor for this blade. Tomorrow's shave will probably go with the Fatboy or the 40's SuperSpeed. Overall a definite DFS with no irritation though I'm not sure that it's quite as close as I would get with other blades.
One final thought- I'm not sure, but it seems like the post-shave feel is different than with the ST-301. The Prime Platinum feels about like I would expect while the regular ST-301 leaves a feel more like I'd expect from a cartridge shave. I'm guessing that something is going on there between blade coatings and/or grind angles.
