Well, this morning's shave continued to provide a lot of learning as I broke out the Fatboy for it's first run. Dialed it in on 4, as Fatboys are supposed to shave almost identically to a Slim (which is my daily driver). It didn't. Very rough and chattery with the blade. After the first pass I decide to re-whip up the lather from the Klar Almond sample generously provided by
@RyX, as I wasn't thrilled with the soap/water mix of the lather as seen in the photo above (sometimes getting that right with a bit of soap smashed on the bottom of the bowl can be tricky). OK, re-whipped with some more product, so now the lather is creamy, smooth, and perfect. , Started again. Pass 2 - same problem. Let me switch out the blade for Pass 3, it's about the third or fourth shave with the Gillette 7 oclock stainless (which I haven't loved, but has been more than adequate so far), so that's probably not it, right? WRONG. That was it. Pass 3 with a new Astra was smooth, silky and effortless, and shaved exactly like my Slim on 4. Either I got a bad blade that didn't shave great and got worse quickly, or this blade is only good for 2 or 3 shaves, or this is just not the blade for me. Only time will tell.
In other news, I think I like the slim just a tad better than the fat boy. A few more shaves will tell if it is because of familiarity or preference, but I really like the weight, balance and everything else about the slim. Also, I bought the fatboy on the bay not looking all shiny, figuring I could polish it out. I haven't tried to polish it yet, but I think the shine may be worn down well into the plating in some areas. I'll double check with a quick polish, but I'm pretty sure my Delta Echo dilemma is solved. I will probably end up sending the Fatboy out for cerakoting.
Final news - The vial of "test sample" from Captains Choice will be replaced by a full container of "beta sample A" of Captain's Choice 45th Parallel AS spalsh. Scott agreed to sell me some of what was left from the original test batch before the final product is developed and sold, and threw in a couple bonus samples for me. What a great guy. The test batch stuff is great, and I would anticipate the final product to be better. I'f you like cherry I'd definitely suggest trying the final product when it launches.
Have a great Monday everyone!
