This is my 22nd month in the 30DC and I am amazed at how much I have learned. This morning I decided to pull out the popsicle stick Kamisori that I made for last MAYhem. I decided that since I might end up suffering a little on this shave that I should start out with my favorite brand of soap. I lathered up with Sweeney Todd, which is a very fitting name for a MAYhem soap, and did my first pass. This WTG pass was easy, bloodless, and left me fairly smooth. I lathered up for pass two and went XTG, again with no issues. I rinsed and realized that I had a DFS with no blood. I followed up with Thayers and some Fine aftershave and didn’t even have any stinging.
When I started the 30DC I was lucky to get through even a DE shave without a weeper or some razor burn, much less with a straight or a Kamisori. After almost two years of focusing on different aspects of my shave routine, I can shave with just about any blade or razor and get a more than acceptable shave. I am now shaving predominately with straights, but can use an SE, a DE, a Feather SS, a popsicle stick Kamisori, a DE without a guard, etc., all of which could butcher me when I joined the 30DC.
If you are new to the 30DC, you can get this kind of results by focusing 30 days at a time on individual aspects of your shave and listening to others. You will constantly be reminded to work on your angle and watch the pressure. In my opinion, these are the most important two things to learn. With practice, they become second nature and lead to consistent shaves.
The most important thing is to have fun with it.
