June 2017!!! Trials and Tribulations June 2 Razor - 1959 (E4) Gillette Fatboy (6) Blade - (2) Soap - Arko Brush - WCS Synthetic Post - Alum Dialed the Fattie up to 6 tonight and whipped up that easy but awesome Arko lather with the West Coast brush. My first impression of the Super-Max Platinum Plus is that it is a nice sharp blade and very smooth. Tonight's shave didn't sway my opinion. In fact, given the performance at 6 I can confirm it's sharpness and, the feel was silky smooth and the alum was quiet. All except for the one bloody spot that I got on my neck while in a G-slide. Apparently I got either the angle wrong at that point or else slid too much sideways at that point. Nothing major. Alum sealed it up fine. Great shave and I'm looking forward to going wide open with this blade tomorrow night. We'll see if it turns harsh or keeps its smooth feel in aggressive mode. Given that I was among a number of us designated as "30DCOG" earlier, the following seems somehow appropriate. Hope you have a great weekend!
That's way better than my first attempt with a straight went. For the angle, I try to keep the spine 2-3 spine widths away from my face. I find this way easier to visualize. Listen for the sound too. When you hear the right sound and it's smooth, try to keep that angle. It takes about 100 shaves with a straight to be proficient. About 30 to be confident. My first shave was so bad I put the straight away and used a cartridge for another year.
New toy show off time. First up from @PanChango a Parker SRX. He included some Shark half blades and Rapira full blades. Thanks Dale!!! Next is the JR176. This is a wood handle he made mated with a Omega 48 knot. Simply awesome. Another wonderful brush!! The pic I took of the brush is too big so here it is with my SOTD for the night, I started on my open blade mostly month with the Parker. First shave with it went very well. It is heavier then the other Shavettes I have and feels great in use, The shave was a knockout!!
This morning's shave was my beat up old pre war tech. This is a super smooth shaver. There is a reason this is the only one if my Gillettes I am keeping, although it may get coated at some point. Two passes and DFS. Soap was Van Vulay, Kansas City Meet Up 2016. Great post shave feel, makes a very thick lather. I have almost mentholated the scent out of the Lucky Tiger aftershave. Added about a gram of crystals to the bottle today, and it was COLD. Good shave.
In the beginning, I struggled as well. The best advice I got ij the beginning was to just do my cheeks while concentrating on the angle. Adam already said it, 2-3 spine widths works well. Watch the pressure! Just concentrate on scraping off the lather, the whiskers will come. After you are comfortable with the cheeks, start working on other areas WTG. Once I was getting consistent results, I started working on XTG and ATG passes. It took at least 30 shaves before I started getting DFS results. It was at least 60 shaves before I even tried ATG and probably at least three months of daily shaves before I considered my self a decent straight razor shaver. I had some frustrating shaves in the beginning, but it was worth it. I enjoy my shaves a lot. Have fun!
Maybe because the razors got so beat up looking by being such good shavers that their original owners used them every day for years and years. Meanwhile the almost mint ones were the razors somebody bought or were given, tried a couple times, and then set aside to go back to their trusty old beat up daily driver...
THat is eggggzacally what I think!! I love thinking there us this anazing amount if history that I am carrying on.
June 3, 2017 ATT Calypso R1 Feather Romero Olivewood Synthetic MdC Vetyver Fine Fresh Vetiver The last shave of the week for the brush and soap. The little synthetic brush is just the perfect size to use with the MdC. I have paid particular attention this week to properly hydrating the soap as I lather which made the soap work even better. Another automatic near BBS 3 pass shave this morning was a great start to the weekend. I hope everyone has a great Saturday.
As always Saturday is a no shave day. Tomorrow however, blade auditions for the GEM Featherweight continue. Blue Stars are up. Then the Featherweight will enter my rotation. And just to prove there is a God and he loves me, I have a Schick Korona coming in the mail courtesy of @Linuxguile, which means I'll be around 'till at least July auditioning blades for it. Life is good!
It was time to see if I could still shave with a safety razor. Apparently I can, I'm absolutely BBS after three passes SOTD TSD Iced Pink Grapefruit Soap B-400 Brush by Tom Gillette Toggle Feather Blade Lucky Tiger Chiseled Face Ghost Town Barber Have a great weekend!
