  1. Especially with a term that has multiple meanings like "sputter". It sounds like something is spitting Platinum onto the blades. (Literally true, but a gross image.)

And then there are the days when we reach into the hat full of adjectives and pull out a size...

  2. What is this "minimalism" you people speak of?!? Don't they do that kind of thing in prison to punish people?

Thank you, and amen brother Jason!!

Dear Lord, sometimes this place is like watching my kids. You look away for a minute, somebody comes up with some sort of cockamamie idea, and all hell has broken loose!:susel:

  3. It cleaned up well. The chrome is not perfect on the doors, but it would probably polish up well. It looked pretty bad when I got it. I actually got with another one on the Bay for $6 or $7 shipped, if I remember correctly. They looked terrible in the pictures, so I will as the only bid.

  5. My wife got a Stirling Vanilla Bean Espresso that is truly awesome. It is a rich and creamy smelling full bodies coffee scent. And Of course, the usual Stirling great lather. If you like coffee, put this one on your winter buying list. I think it is a Fall/Winter only scent from Stirling.
  6. Thanks for the tip Frank. I will take a look at that one as well. One other coffee scent is Mystic Water Cuppa Joe that adds oakmoss and vetiver to the background.
  7. Heresy because you read "canned goo" on shaving forums and bought in?

Or because you've mastered your new tools, used Barbasol, and disliked it?
  8. June 22 - Soap Smooth

    Merkur 34C
    Gillette SharpEdge (Day 4)
    French Vanilla (JR #72)
    DIY PSO
    Soap Smooth Céret soap
    Alum/Thayers/AOS PSB

My daughter asked me to shave with her Father's day gift to me, Soap Smooth Céret. I had used Riez from the pass around box and liked it and when I smelled Céret, it smelled good (and it was 1/2 off) so I agreed to pick it up at Pasteur's. I couldn't pass up a discount! This soap has a strong scent of cherries and vanilla. It is really good smelling. I had looked up this soap and found a video commenting that it irritated his skin. In no way was I, my wife or my daughter were irritated by the soap. Having seen this, I intentionally made the lather with more water than usual and as such made a lighter and less dense lather. It was plenty slick. Today was the last use of the SharpEdge. Alum indicated a light sting but the shave after 3.5 passes was only DFS. I think the blade was showing a loss in sharpness. I had to retouch up the jawline and still found it had not cleaned it well. Swapped the blade out for a Rapira Platinum Lux. I enjoyed the scent but the lather lacked a bit of thickness. I think it was mostly my fault. All three of us enjoyed the scent.

  9. Barbasol is a perfectly viable tool. Not one I use often, but there remains a can on my bathroom counter that gets occasional use when I need a quick shave.

  10. Agreed. I've used Barbasol and similar, and have managed better results with other products. However, many people _like_ it, and it works well for them. So what? Nobody here is saying 'You Must Buy X Soap To Be A True Wet Shaver'.

    Head Shave

    Fine Shave+

Classic Samurai shavette w/ Shark blade
    Omega Midget
    Trumper's Rose Cream
    Skin Bracer

I've been using cold water the last month with the most minimal prep and it has been working very well. The other day I tried shaving before my shower(after work) and it worked out pretty well. I wonder if the oils on my skin kind of act like a pre-shave of some kind? Crazy thought Huh.

  12. I enjoy a SR shave, shavettes let me avoid the rabbet hole of honing. I didn't know (re; didn't listen to what others were saying) when I started my wet shaving adventure using an inexpensive shavette I was going hard core. Guess I inadvertently did what I do when tackling a project - do the hard part first, then cruise through the easier stuff.

I ought to order a bottle of that FW since it was me that encouraged Jim. They also have other products in their line.
  13. @Bama Samurai -I like the idea of shavettes and now the practice of shavettes for all the reasons you stated. And it's a different experience from DE & SE which I like. I'm pleased that I can use it effectively and efficiently enough now to shave quickly for work and not be torn up:)

@Keithmax I didn't know :). I thought straight razor shavers were the extreme ones, but lately I've read several SR shavers say it's easier than shavettes.

  14. Because I have not used canned shaving cream since I started wet shaving. Yes I understand that they are both soap and both achieve the same goal. But whipping up my own lather is part of the experience/process. It is almost therapeutic in nature. I do not wet shave because it is easy or quick. I shave this way because I enjoy it. Because it is somewhat nostalgic. Because I found my Grandfathers old shaving brush and was curious about the process. I like the fact that the razor I am using could have been used by someone almost 100 years ago.

I called heresy not to offend you or say that you were wrong. I called heresy because I thought it was funny, I like Monty Python, and during the Dark Ages when something was new and different it was written off as heresy. If you believed in science and not what the church taught, you were labeled as a heretic. If you believed the earth was round when everybody else thought it was flat, again you were a heretic.

Wet shaving as a community has for whatever personal reason have decided to shave in a way that was done when there wasn't any canned shaving cream. Yes we use newer equipment. I do not have any DE's that pre-date canned shaving cream(1949). I do have some straights and a couple of SE's that do. Personally you can use what ever product you like. It is your shave and that is the only thing that matters. I do not think less of or hold it against anybody for using what ever product they like.

So to answer your question, No I did not buy in to something I read on some forum, nor would I say that I have mastered any of my new tools. Heresy because it is not for me. If you or anybody else was offended or put off, I apologize they were offended. That was not my intentions.

  15. I am a bit surprised you have jumped on a bottle yet. I do thank you turning me on to it, though. The scent is terrific.
  16. I started with shavettes as well, and I find straight razors easier to use. But my opinion could be skewed because I got used to the shavettes prior to using a straight. It's the honing that has kept me from diving head first into straight razors. I enjoy them, but I find shavettes so much more practical in general from a time/upkeep standpoint.
  17. I was going to stay out of this one, but who is up for a shave while bungee jumping? Bonus points for an open blade. I'll go second...

  20. I can't remember what EdT it is based on, but Fine All American Blend is their interpretation of a cologne. If you can find it, you might be set. I have about 3/8 of an inch left in my bottle.
